In the Cat World, head-rubbing is a sign of affection. Parents and siblings (brothers and sisters) will very often head-rub just to say to each other “Hey, I like you. You’re my friend.”
“Marking” or being “marked” throughout the Animal World is a sign of possession. Wedding or friendship rings may work for humans, so long as the humans wear the rings on the Boys or Girls Nights Out, But there is nothing in the world like the pungent smell of cat urine to announce to everyone in the vicinity that you are loved by someone.
