Hooray! This mass bail-out isn't as bad as the last one, but the reason is also a bit more silly, too. I'm still trying to be as FA-centric as possible, since I just don't want to deal with managing a bunch art sites at once, but it's a bummer when some of my favorites are leaving.

I gotta agree. Although I can understand the reason behind so many people being frustrated and leaving, I just don't see how leaving is going to make a difference.
But it really is a bummer how it is affecting all the big and popular artists hear, enough to have them decide to leave. I've already seen a TON of my favorite artists in the last...3-4 days posting up journals about them leaving for other sites.
But FA's been my stomping grounds since '08. Don't think that's going to change any time soon.

I've been registered with FA since 2005, and I've certainly seen my fair share of mass exodus incidents. This one doesn't even hold a candle to the whole underage-art TOS update some time back in terms of sheer numbers.

In the past, everyone always seemed to come back after a month or two. Then again, there are more options in the marketplace these days, so who knows if that will hold true? All I know is that I like it here, and I don't intend to leave unless I'm forced.

Hell, just reposting 430+ pieces with be an absolute nightmare all on its own.

Lol. What was the raging like when that happened?

There were two, really. The first was when the TOS upheld underage art. My god, the journals seemed to go on for two weeks. Every day with the ranting and the gallery deletion and the righteous rage.

The second was the more recent one, which was when the TOS was updated again to remove underage art. There was less of an upheaval, but the people who posted art of that nature mostly bailed out to Inkbunny. Interestingly enough, it seemed like some people bailed out all over again just because they felt it took staff too long come around to their position.

Well, at least people were ranting instead of whining. People whining is probably worse, and that's what seems to be going on with the drama going on now.

I also have a Weasyl account, just in case, but I don't use it for anything at this time.

FA certainly has some warts, but I'm satisfied with it in general. The uptime is even pretty good when you consider the sheer load that it's under and that the whole thing is kind of a hobby. ^^

But yeah, I can understand the upset...heck 'upset' doesn't even cover it when nobody has your back. It's worse when you have clear threats, both parties know where the other is, and law enforcement goes "...so, what do you want me to do? Go over there and arrest them? We can't do anything 'till we have a cold corpse."

Yeah, but funny thing...you can shoot, or fight in self defense and get held liable for it. This world doesn't work with half a brain it it's head Slither. Nobody expects it to be fair, but when authority is against you...yeah, it can feel like the end of the world.

I honestly think Weasyl will just be a fad. I remember when people were swooning over Nabyn and that seems to have dropped off the face of the planet.

Well, you never know, right? I though WoW would just be a fad when it stole a bunch of players from EQ, and that they would all come back, just like what happened with DAoC, Horizon, and a bunch of others. Didn't quite turn out like I predicted. ^_~

I'm pretty sure, though, that if people do move en masse to another system, it won't be because of one journal telling them all to.

In my opinion all this mess is just a bunch of bullshit that should never have happened. Everyone involved is at fault.

The stalker for being a creepy fuck.
The victim for not blocking him and assuming the admins didnt care.
The admins for not having a more iron clad system and not making their intentions known to all parties involved.
And the people freaking out atthe admins because of a misunderstanding on the part of the gictim and her friend who posted the big journal.

I just hope it gets resolved with as little drama as possible.

Well, you can pretty much figure that there will be as much drama as people can whip themselves into. It kind of comes with the territory. I haven't seen anybody flat out delete their gallery yet, at least. It's always such a pain when they brake everyone's favs, then come back in a month and post 500 things.

I just figure that any decision made by jumping on a bandwagon, especially a really silly one, is most likely going to be short-lived.

I understand the reasons, I can see from both points of view. But a mass exodus isn't really gonna help anything.

You know what - I had real world stalker problems. Really nasty ones. - and they were using this site to attack me. And..i handled it. Went to the police with the logs, filed with their ISP's to have them banned, got restraining orders issued.... problem solved.

Coz it was my problem, not FA's.

So now i can just sit back and enjoy the site every day!

honestly i have no blooming idea what is going one...one benefit to staying out of the muck of drama i guess...or being insane makes me see past all of it.. gah enough of that. If this has to do what i think is happening, ppl leaving FA for w.e there is one good for it...

Oh come on... Every other furry art site has better features than this place. I'd love to have your work in my favorites on an art site that let me put those favorites in folders.

Not to be standoffish, though. I really do appreciate that you enjoy my gallery enough to have an opinion on that. ^^

But you don't have to leave, just try out the other sites along with this one. I use about 5 art sites keeping them all synched. It gives me a lot more viewers and chances of people to discover my work than if I was just on one site.
You might like it if you give it a shot or at least make an account before someone takes your username.

It is really great and it deserves more attention.

I have accounts on IB and MM that I use to watch people / keep just in case, but I really do like existing in just one place. I enjoy being able to answer people who comment on my posts, and it would just be a nightmare to try to manage multiple accounts and keep them synched. Besides, I have a ton of history build up here already, and over 430 posts to try to move even if I wanted to go. x_x

It is a bit of a pain at first until you get used to it. If I knew programming I would figure out a way to feed all those alerts into a single program that exchanges information with the website. Of course I'm sure you have a lot more alerts than I ever will to handle.

When weasyl gets an API implemented, someone can write a code to transfer galleries. Inkbunny already has one. So I'd hold out for that.

I've become mostly a lurker here, though, so nothings really driving me away anytime soon. Well, more of a lurker now than I used to be, but still.

The super condensed version is that two FA users had an issue, and some people feel that the admins dealt with it poorly. Right or wrong, that was the original event. Part two came when a third party posted a journal to stir up a monumental drama storm about it, condemning the admins and urging as many people as possible to leave in protest. It has apparently caught on. :P

This sort of thing seems to happen every year or so. ^^

Pfft. Well, I certainly missed this! Would have been lovely to watch with a bag of popcorn or something. XD

Super short version: Users A and B had a problem. Some people feel the admins resolved it poorly, especially user C. C posted an angry journal condemning the admins and encouraging a mass exodus.... which people are listening to, for some reason.

The event happened off FA, but the drama on FA. C's journal was on FA.

FA is the art community version of Warcraft or Facebook, where a lot of people don't actually like it, but it's where all their friends are. Occassionally something (like the current drama) will shock the group into waking up and remembering that they still don't like it here, and try to move. But not everyone moves with them, and the group that tried to escape eventually has to come back because it's still where their friends are staying.

I think the only successful exodus I've witnessed was the move from MySpace to Facebook. Love or hate it, the latter was definitely an improvement over the former. I guess we'll see if Weasyl provides enough improvement to win people over for keeps.

You have a somewhat more cynical view of it than I do, but who knows? Maybe you've got it pinned better than me. The way I see it, though, whatever site has the most users will be the art community version of WoW or FB. I think the insanity comes from the population more than the system.

If everybody moved to MisspelledMustelid overnight, then I would be good money there would be another mass exodus from there over something stupid within a year. It's just how things work. ^_~

However, it's not just the large population; It's an "unhappy" population using a subpar service that may or may not have better competition. The toughest part even when better competition does spring up is the half of the userbase that's comfortable (But not happy) and therefore opposed to change, so they'll either stay put, or start to move, see that it's different, and come back. And when half of the mass stays put, the other half eventually falls back too.

Actually I've observed things working differently than that; If Weasyl provided enough of what people want to get them to move there, unless they made some very drastic changes, the userbase would have no reason to try and exodus again. People trying to find a better site didn't happen voluntarily until FA in 2005. Back on DeviantArt, Y-Gallery, SheezyArt, people were happy; It's the communities that kicked them out. People were even happy on FAP until the site pulled the plug. FA is the only art community I have observed where people try to exodus on an increasingly regular basis. I'd dare say you're the one sounding cynical here ;)

Sites with an equally large population, or even larger (ie. DeviantArt) do not have this exodus problem. I'm open to new info though, so if you know of other large sites where this is a common occurrance, I'd like to hear! But to my knowledge, the three main ones on the internet are FurAffinity, Facebook, and World of Warcraft. The main reason for Facebook is the privacy and feed changes they keep making, turning the site into something different than what people signed up for.

I think that our points differ mainly in that you blame the site and I blame the user base.

That's good, I love seeing your cutely attractive dragon in FA boundaries and no overly new and complex sites! It's hard to leave FA anyway and when you do something about it will just stick to people..
