Lylatian History up to the point of the game, starting from what you know in the video games.
Star-Fox Era
Genius scientist and inventor Andross Oikonny is a nuclear physicist researching experimental particle fusions in a nuclear facility located in Cervia (Cornarian equivalent of Russia).
An explosion is triggered that destroys a major Cervian city and kills a huge number of people. Cervian investigators blame the explosion on Andross upon the discovery he was conducting questionable research on bio-organics off the record. Andross, a survivor of the explosion, is taken into state custody.
Because of certain debts owed by government officials, the Cervian government's hands are tied, and cannot outright prosecute Andross for his crime. Andross is turned over to the global government custody through Natherica (Cornerian equivalent of America), and both countries reach an agreement on Exile.
Andross Oikonny is Exiled to [Venom], then believed to be the most remote planet in the Lylat system. The relative youth of space travel and colonization ensures that he will remain isolated.
(+10 years) The Cornerian Space Institute records a number of changes over the next ten years to [Venom's] ecosystem, as the planet becomes increasingly toxic and inhospitable. Believing that Andross is continuing to conduct his research in violation of Exile agreements, a team of military pilots is sent to run reconaissance. The team consists of James McCloud, Pigma Dengar, and Peppy Hare. Only Peppy returns.
Peppy's report that Andross is building an army in secret is not believed, and Peppy is dismissed from Active duty. A moratorium against traveling to [Venom] is instilled. The planet becomes so toxic as to be declared inhospitable to life, and is renamed Venom.
(+5 years) Andross declares himself Emperor of the entire Lylat system and launches his army against Corneria. The Lylatian Military Fleet (LMF) fails to stem the assault. When Corneria itself is attacked, Peppy forms a team of mercenary pilots with James' son, Fox, to help defend Corneria, with some success.
The Star-Fox team is then commissioned by the Natherican military on behalf of the global community, to lead a counter-assault against Venom. After battling through Andross's loyal followers entrenched within the various planets of Lylat, A meager assault force makes it through. Star-Fox spearheads the attack, and Andross is supposedly killed.
(+5 years) Andross's nephew, Andrew Oikonny, assumes the mantle of Emperor and gains control of the remainder of the forces loyal to his Uncle, along with much of the leftover technology. Andrew is confronted during his initial attack on Fortuna by Star-Fox, and killed.
(+10 years) A new planet just off orbit is discovered, and Star-Fox is sent to investigate. Fox returns with a new team-member in the mysterious Krystal and tales of intelligent dinosaurs. A science and peace expedition finds the planet barren. The Star-Fox team returns to the new planet, now known as Sauria, to investigate, and never returns.
Colonization Era:
(+20 years) Technology left behind by Andross contributes to Lylat's technological growth. Gates are made that enable interstellar travel, and one is built in Lylat in anticipation of it's twin eventually being built in another system entirely. To this end, an expedition sets out for the nearest closest star system believed to have colony supporting planets.
(+150 years) The expedition reaches the Xavaria system, and a gate is established, linking back to Lylat to allow instantaneous travel. Colonies are founded on every life-capable world in the system.
(+50 years) The Lylat system's gate stops working, cutting off Xavaria from interstellar travel back to Lylat and all communication from Lylat ceases. A computer error caused by an unforseen bug in the program running the gate causes the location of Lylat to become permanently lost.
(+40 years) The other star systems are discovered, and further colonies are established. The people of Lylat flourish, multiply, and prosper. Technologies are refined.
The Hepasut War Era:
The Hepasut system is discovered. A gate is built and a fledgling colony is established there. The colonists discover that the planet is already inhabited by the Hepan peoples. The colonists are enslaved.
The Lylatian Military Fleet attempts to free the colonists, but fails, sparking a war.
The Hepas aliens sweep genocide throughout the Lylatian colonies, believing that the Lylatians are pests and that their existence is a galactic accident.
(+30 years) Millions upon millions die in a series of inter-system fights as the Hepas learn how to use the Lylatian network of linked interplanetary systems. After nearly three decades of cat-and-mouse, the Lylatians muster enough force to attack Hepasut in an all-out assault. The Hepasutian ruling class, directly threatened, call for a cease in the conflict.
Today:
Dissatisfied with the power the LMF wields in the years following the war with the Hepas, stirrings of resentment are felt throughout the colonies...
