-VST- Post-Mortem

It's over. FINALLY, right?
That's never a good feeling to have when a project as large as this is completed. I mean some matter of relief is fine, but when you're happy to see something end that means you're happy to see it go. Not exactly the feeling I wanted to foster for a project I was hoping to continue, but I think a lot of people share that sentiment... It's unfortunate, but it happens. I'll try to explain why that's the case in the following journal, so future furry artrepreneurs take note:
First of all, to anybody reading this who still feels upset over the tournament... how can I put this delicately... DON'T. Stop taking this personally! Just stop it! This is a silly little competition for silly little characters and fans of a silly little adult theme. I understand that some people have strong personal attachments to these characters, but I am not affecting those here! These characters are not being changed or injured or affected in any permanent way! It's just an inconsequential scenario, a hypothetical occurrence, after which everything will go on as if this never happened. You should root for competitors like you root for a sports team, but to form any greater attraction or to admonish any particular side for liking what they like while sitting in completely oblivion to the fact that you like something equally as much for entirely different arbitrary reasons is the absolute height of immaturity. I appreciate the passion, but you guys have to learn how to control it and when to properly apply it. Like towards things that actually matter. Speaking of that...
The vote buying. Holy crap was that a bad idea on my part and I am so sorry for instituting it you guys. In theory I still think it COULD work with the proper balance level (which obviously wasn't used here), but for all future projects I'm just going to avoid anything like this. This was one of the rare moments in my life where I let my capitalist spirit overcome my ethics. Yeah, I did need the money and OH BOY did I get it (really regret that was all made public, by the way. Please nobody think I'm rich. I'm currently unemployed and going to college so that all won't last long or be spent superfluously). It won't happen again though, no matter how in need I am. I prioritized cash over the voices of my audience and I apologize sincerely for doing so. I honestly thought the vote-buying option would regulate itself a little better (I was expecting 50-100 votes being bought for each page tops). There are many options that can be considered to better balance such an option in the future, but this experience has taught me what I already knew: The best way to balance the influence of money in a democracy is to remove it entirely. So I'll be doing that from now on. Again, sorry guys. Please stop complaining about the people that took advantage of the system. You can't fault somebody for how they choose to spend their money. Blame the system itself. That's on me.
I still think the tournament itself was a good idea. If vote buying had not been an element at all I would probably have considered this a smashing success. Public vote totals rose increasingly as the thing went on, along with page views, and it seemed like (for the most part) people behaved themselves. Yes there was drama, there still is, and there always will be, but that's why it was expected. It's an unfortunate fact of life that when you get enough people together, odds are, one of them will be THAT GUY. The more people you gather, the more of THOSE GUYS will appear. But they can be easily ignored and I want to commend the rest of you for, by and large, behaving yourselves and not feeding the resident trolls. We can't let immaturity affect our lives or our love of competition. This was fun and I had a good time offering it to you all. I hope those of you that enjoy competition (and vore) enjoyed it as well.
I do have a project that I'll be unveiling in the coming weeks. It will be a vote-influenced thing and you will be able to contribute money to it (because I still don't have a job, remember). But it will be entirely different from the -VST- and the money-buying parts of it will be kept separate from the vote-influencing parts. Much the same way jelly is kept apart from peanut butter until they are combined to make sandwich nirvana, they will be two elements that combine with one another to support a greater whole. And don't you dare mention that two-in-one jar stuff. That never offers the proper balance of jelly and you know it.
... I think I got side-tracked. Anyway, the details of my new project will be journaled in the coming days, so keep an eye out! I will be very public with its rules to make sure everything is at least partially troubleshot before pulling the trigger, so hopefully we can avoid some of the bigger problems the -VST- ran into and come up with a project we will all look forward to seeing continue instead of end.

FA+

and heck it was a hell of a ride to see!
But you know if you didn't like the option next time you can always correct it!
I'm glad I stayed out of the finale.
As far as the negative feelings, there were (and are, and will be) a lot of those, but as you and others have said, lessons learned and things that can be changed in future endeavors.
As far as my own perspective - I was honestly considering throwing in $50 in the last page of the semifinals through someone else, but didn't do as that would have broken the spirit of the agreement I had made. This would have changed the outcome of the match. Would things have still been as crazy then? I'm not sure. Roco vs. Mune would have been...possibly a bit more tame final as Roco would have had no other financial supporters most likely, and Mune's side most likely wouldn't have thrown in $500+ unless they thought that amount would have been coming from Roco's side. A "what if" we won't get to explore but I'll wonder about for a while.
The "money doubles as commission fodder" and then changing to "no commissions" was huge in how this was laid out. If there were never any extra incentive from square one, I believe your estimate of 50-100 payvotes tops per page would have been accurate. Myself, and others, were quite willing to drop significant sums in the early going as that money was not only giving an extra say in a project but also letting us get things we most likely would have paid you for anyway. This definitely altered things as when the option to double up with those options was turned off, each side still knew how far the other side would go in defending their character of choice, and things only escalated from there, rather than falling back. (Admittedly, if the option to get commission options stayed throughout the entire tournament, things probably would have escalated into...I'd probably guess between $6,000-$7,500 for the tournamenta as a total.) I still maintain that this could have been done as a group project with multiple commissioners picking up the work and the payments, but it's probably better to not have a full payvote system at all in the future, as you've seen how out of hand it can get.
At a risk of making a suggestion that brings you closer to "Damien's Tournament", you're probably going to need to regulate how people try and rally support for their characters in future versions of this, even outside of the jurisdiction of FA. (Even saying this is against my nature as I particularly like the idea that doing something outside of FA that involves FA people, that is never posted directly to FA, isn't within FA's power to regulate, thus "beating the system" but I wholly realize it's for the better here.) On one hand, you could go full-on Damien Mode and say "anyone so much as IMming someone for votes in this tournament is penalized/disqualified", on the other hand you could allow people to ask for a friend to vote for them but outlaw things where people offer services or outright cash to people who vote for them. I could see the people who dropped the most money here just shifting to that with the absence of a true payvote system supporting you as an artist.
One question I need to ask, and may be on the minds of some who contributed in the earlier rounds - will you be able to balance your new project (as well as any art you're doing for the end of this one) with the commission backlog from those who contributed while the "double down" option was still in effect? I'm pretty sure most of us are willing to wait for a good while, myself included, but perhaps a "do a couple pages of commission work, then do a couple pages of project work" might be needed, especially with just how many people are in that backlog.
>These characters are not being changed or injured or affected in any permanent way!
Imagine the shitstorm that would have hit if they were. Like...it would have been "Stank buys a Mercedes-Benz" level shit there. A tournament of that nature would never happen, I'm pretty sure, but the idea of it is still pretty funny to me.
Also *mortem. Sorry, inner grammar nazi had to point that out. :p
Seeing a sudden reveal of its contents where the status quo has shifted causes a sense of 'alarm' for the losing side, and at best paranoia for the winning side: All the cards are suddenly laid out and it causes a red flag of 'action is required!' The losing side sees what the current gap is and makes their individual attempt to fill that gap. The winning side worries that other supporters will slow down and the losing side will push ahead. Choas ensues.
The only place where it counts is at the final update(s); with the initial pay-votes only dictating how much is required to 'catch up'.
Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.
But since that wasn't your goal, it must have been horrifying!
I know some people would be fine with that, but there is an appeal for many others in competition. Just because some people handle it immaturely doesn't mean it should be abandoned. If anything that's more of a reason to support it. We all want to keep our nice things, right?
If sporting events were determined by voting.........chaos. Imagine this: During each baseball game they take a vote at the beginning of the inning. If your team gets more votes, they get an extra out that inning.
Would that be a sport you'd want to watch? It would be horrifying.
See, when people vote, they are expressing themselves and their opinion. When money can take the place of votes, it's in essence telling each person "You don't matter - money does." That'll be a deeply unpopular message every time and it'll always cause some people to fly off the handle.
Imagine standing in a long line waiting your turn for something, only for someone to walk in, walk to the front, flash some bills, and be allowed to go first. This behavior would enrage most everyone, no matter the context.
I also don't think politics are a personal issue until you get to the level of actually addressing a political figure or influencing the leader of a cause, but that's another discussion...
The votes...yeah that is tricky as Thanatos up there was right, things will turn into a popularity contest at the drop of a hat and sadly there isn't a way to stop that when its open to others to vote. As for the money, the best way really to keep that in check would be to have a limit on people, like each person is only allowed to buy $5 of votes or something and then they are cut off, plus if its a even number then there is a bit more order. Back to the normal votes...yeah as I said its going to turn into a popularity contest, I've seen it happen WAY too much, been there myself in a contest I was in and boy was it not fun, way too much drama, butthurt, and backstabbing for me to take. One way to do that would be to have judges but for them to work people would have to do their own work/comics like the VOCT you were in last year...but OCTs don't seem to work so well on FA considering I've wanted to start one and never works...due to no popularity and prizes -_-
All in all this was good for learning the pros and cons witch you did. Would love to hear what you got cooking up next and if you need any help I'd lend a hand if I can, take some of the weight off of you if any so you won't be so stressed.
as for your separation of funds and whatnot next time, perhaps something like http://aryion.com/g4/view/235730 ? Votes are the only thing that affect the contest outcome, but people can give money and donate towards their favourite side, and instead of influencing the outcome the money affects any 'extra', another page of backstory, a more detailed digestion sequence, a page of escape or 'hurting' the winner before being caught, colour, or even funding an alternative end if enough is put down?
Looking forward to future project, Stankenstein!
Also, in light of your future project: What's like Nutella, then?
Either way though, good luck on your next project and lets hope that some users wont try to sway the voters like they were doing before :/
Awesome. :)
