Lewis Carol originally wrote it as a nonsense question.

What Mazz said is absolutely correct...the original was intended to have no answer...however a plausible answer still exists... "because poe wrote on both." (as in Edgar Allan Poe." I often use this riddle and answer to illustrate the point that there is always an answer to every question...no matter how impossible it may seem... ^v^
