Transgender animals

So this is something I've always been curious about: If you were an actual anthro animal who was trans, and went through hormone replacement therapy, what sorts of gender dimorphic attributes come with hormones, and which don't?
For example, if you're a trans boy lion, would hormones give you a mane? Or would that need to be done artifically?
How about trans deer guys? Would they grow horns? Come to think of it, since horns are always growing and molting in relation to the stag sexual cycle, would they also fall off if you went MtF?
These questions keep me up at night. xD And the crazy thing is, it's not just a hypothetical fantasy question if we're basing these anthros off real animals. But I have no idea how many specialists there are in the field of zooendocrinology.

I think it'd be just like with us humans. It really depends on what hormones cause the growth of these things. Horns...I'm not so sure on. It's of the bony material but i'm not sure if it would be the same as like hair...
The mane thing though I don't see why it wouldn't, unless it was with that particular lion's genes. Like humans, when a FtM takes hormones the changes brought on varies. While one person might turn into a hairy man beast, another might only get a few chin hairs. Hair though, and it's placement, just like how our bodies store fat, would be something determined by male or female hormones. Females have more prominent hairs in different places than males, and some males are just hairless naturally.
So in theory, yes, a Ftm lion would gain a mane from hormone replacement. As for horns...if it works the same as hair, then yeah, if not, and it's an actual appendage that you have to be biologically male to get, no.
Hormones can only give, they cannot take. A MtF may grow breasts, but they may not lose their deep voices. A FtM may gain fat in places more male oriented, but it won't remove his breasts.
hope that's not too tmi, just what I've learned being FtM myself. n.n
I am pretty curious about these sorts of things, but as you said, it really depends on which hormones do what. I honestly don't know how they work. The mane probably would come in, though I suspect not as thick as a natural mane? But I'm guessing a bit.
The horns though, I really have no clue. It'd have to be something for a scientist to tell us, heh. Hormones don't "take", but the thing about horns is that they grow and shed throughout a stag's mating cycle (I think), so they're probably grown by male hormones. My guess is that inhibiting testosterone would at least prevent regrowth of the horns. But I really dunno!
And no, not TMI at all. ^^
And yeah I agree with the horns. If it does depend on the mating cycle, it would make sense that it was the hormones, so if a male wanted to transition to female, the horns might fall off because of the reduction of testosterone when she takes female hormones, and they might not come back, but that may also take a while of them being on the hormones faithfully. I know MtF women's breasts don't come in immediately, it takes a while and some of them might not even get very much of them, just like a biological woman. Some people just have more.
Still, that's all really interesting... I kind of want to see that worked into a story or comic or picture somewhere, now! I can see the horns issue being a potentially embarrassing tell for an otherwise androgynous trans doe. I like the idea of these sorts of things making their way into stories...
Still something I'd like to see with a custom character for it, but I need to ease up on commissions right now. xD
I don't think you can undo what's already been done (like IRL human FTM will not loose boobage FTM may not loose a deep voice or adams apple) but I think you may add to what is not there yet (So add boobs, antlers, etc)
It's a very out of the box question to be wondering about :p Assuming you're thinking that an anthro would be just like the ones we all daydream about, then it would be just humans with animal accessories, so hairplugs for FTM lions and Horn replacement therapy for deers wouldn't be out of the question :p
I do like pondering the sorts of accessories that trans animals would have though! Mane wigs would be a standard early accessory for lots of trans lions, at least until they can get the hairplugs or the mane from hormones, if that is a major effect. lol, and yes, horn replacement therapy! A very important step.
Incidentally, that gives me weird ideas about horns for stags. It's a hormonal cycle, kind of like a human woman's, right? So if they took birth control pills daily, could they keep their horns on 24/7? :3 That would be a personal choice, I'd imagine.
