So there I was...

...driving north heading home and I think I'm getting tailgated by a drunk who moves to my blind spot and hangs there despite my slowing down to allow him to pass and the speed up to keep him out of the danger spot. Lightbar turns on.
Texas State Trooper. Ah. OK not speeding, got license, insurance and a 9mm pistol lying on the passenger seat. Shit.
Pull over punched the window down and kept my hands in sight.
I conceal carry and I am licensed, I had pulled it out of the holster and then forgot to put it in the center console.
The officer asks for license and insurance. I say yes sir, but before we do anything I'm a CCW holder and I have a pistol next to me what would you like for me to do?
The office was friendly and professional. He asked where the weapon was visually checked asked if I had any others and had me step out to the rear of the car away from it. I explain and asked permission to reached down to unbuckle. I moved slow, and the cop is grinning.
The lights out over my license plate he checks my license and CCW and thanks me for identifying myself as armed and to get the light fixed.
Mistakes can be better than coffee to wake you up.

A while back I started attending a monthly meet and greet with a local open carry group at a local eatery. Nothing but positive responses from folks so far. Many are unaware the OC is legal here, so its a great educational thing.
Like muscles, a right not exercised is easy to be lost, and in the current political cliamate it needs to be worked well.
I've had a CCL for three years, but have only started holstered carry for about a year. I was concerned my sister didn't carry her revolver with her when business took her into bad areas of town when I realized I was being a hypocrite. OC is also legal in Kentucky and while uncommon usually uncommented. I have struck up some great conversations with people carrying; it is an effective icebreaker.
I should check to see if there are any local carry groups in town. You can meet the nicest people.
