Don't know about anyone else, but the thing that got me interested in the furry fandom first was the art. The fandom wouldn't exist without it, and it is still the part that probably I enjoy the most.
Unfortunatley I can't draw anything.
So I do the only thing I can, I write crappy stories mostly involving horses because that works for me.
I still love the visual side though, so I commission art whenever I can, and try to add somthing to what I do by bringing the characters to life better than I can with my words.
In my brief time in the fandom, Ive enjoyed so many artists work, though with a heavy emphasis on people who draw equines, so I thought rather than write about me or writing which noone gives a toss about, Id write about artists.
So this is the first of those, and the idea will be to feature a different artist each time who I think is great and then open up to discussion on what you like and why.
Today I'm featuring Jaleo
jaleo
He is one of the best equine artists out there, with a beautiful style and an ability to bring characters to life. His amazing cars, bikes and other paraphenalia are just an added bonus. Also he has a fine humourous sensibility which shines through.
What I like the most is that all his characters have real unique personalities. A lot of art with horse characters can seem pretty generic, like they have been stamped from the central stallion factory number 2 with minor changes in colour and size of genitalia.
(as an aside in the fandom as a stallion character you often get treated like youve come from the same factory with crowd pleasing genitalia your only selling point.)
You feel all of the ones he draws have a personality and a backstory worth knowing. They are also pretty hot :P
Jaleo isnt very active now, but he is offering the chance to buy access to all his artwork over the years as a downloadable file. I've bought one and it's great, I would recommend it.

Sadly, if you aren't a great artist, you get ignored in the fandom. So the other option is, to be an art whore, create a popular character and let everybody rape him. When it comes to writing, pages like Furaffinity is very hard to prosper. I knew years ago pages like Yiffstar were good ones for writers.
When it comes to me, I look always for artists that have an unique style, I specially like the ones with a really real touch, the ones working with colors, landscapes, but also I like some that draw more comic style, black and white pics, clean lineart...when it comes to the content, I'd to admit I'm here for 75% clean art / 25% yiff (but not weird stuff or fetishes).
And aww well, thanks for talking about me :P But I'm not a great artist heheh, I'm mostly forgotten here in FA and I don't catch people's attention because my art is simple and not full of color, not full of kinkiness.
SoFurry is a bit better as a writer, but it still is a hard game getting people to read what you do. In the end I mostly do it for me, and if people read it then great. I will get some sexy pics of my char but only for story tie ins or with friends characters.
Unique is the key, which is one of the reasons I like your work. I can tell a Jaleo pic without the watermark, something about the style and how the characters work. Its part of your personality coming through I think.
I am hoping to get some works done more focussing on artistic effect as well from some artists that seem less well known but I love how they bring life to a page. Mostly for story tie ins I think.
I think you are a great artist and you put yourself down a bit, but Im not the only one to point that out to you. You have a lot of watchers for a reason. So far I've found though that not many will ever fave or even less comment, it seems to be part of the way the fandom works. Furry World has a huge gradient of people, a lot of whom will look and enjoy maybe but are never going to click, comment or spend money, its just the way it works. Maybe 1% of the people who actually appreciate your work will interact more directly.
All it means is what you see coming back to you isnt all there is, its just the visible tip of a big iceberg.
Then again I count it a miracle if a story of mine gets 100 views and 1 or 2 favourites. :P
Sure you recognize any pic of mine without watermark, but if someone that found a pic without watermark and dont knwo me, could use it against me, until someone finds out :P
I have those watchers, but, honestly I think 50% of them arent in the fandom and they just forgot to unwatch or erase their accounts. I can say that too because in the past I could get many many faves, views and comments and nowadays I hardly get a bunch. As you say maybe a 1% does, those that have been foloowing my art for years and we have more of a "personal" treatement because we have been replying comments to each other for years.
I guess that's discouraging to see those few people paying attention on a story, FA isnt the place for that...
