It's great because some people can get very clever and you can have a good laugh.
It sucks because when someone is actually serious about a problem, you don't know whether to sympathise or brush it off as a joke.

I always hated because while people CAN be clever and witty, most are just idiots making bad ideas come alive at the expense of others.

Exactly. I really don't like 'jokes' that make people feel some sort of negative feeling, whether it is getting their hopes up over nothing, or making them angry over nothing. The point of a joke is for everyone to laugh, not just the person pulling it.
