Hockeyfurs Playoff Predictor Contest 2013
12 years ago
Its the most wonderful time, of the year~
For our seasoned hockeyfurs vets, I know this is many of your favorite contests. For the new blood, the rules to this game are below. Everyone is invited to play, good luck!
This is a game that's a lot like picking a March madness bracket, but tweaked for the NHL. It works like this
-At the beginning of each playoff round, you predict which team wins each series and in how many games.
- When you correctly pick a series winner, you get 5 points. When you pick correctly and pick the correct number of games, you get an additional 3 points for a total of 8
- If you pick the same team in consecutive rounds, and they win both rounds, you get double points for that series. For example, if you pick Detroit to beat Anaheim, and they do, and then you pick them again in round two and they win again, you get 10 points for that round two prediction instead of 5 (or 16 if you guess the number of games).
- Picking in consecutive rounds has a stackable bonus, too. Going back to the previous example, if you pick Detroit again in round 3, and they win, you'd get 15 points (or 24), because it would be worth triple.
- Scores will be posted up to date in a submission at the end of each playoff round. Highest score after the Stanley Cup finals wins
- Anyone can play!
Ill be making my selections in a comment below the journal, you can use as a reference. Good luck everyone!
Eastern Conference:
(8) NY Islanders @ (1) Pittsburgh
(7) Ottawa @ (2) Montreal
(6) NY Rangers @ (3) Washington Capitals
(5) Toronto @ (4) Boston
Western Conference
(8) Minnesota @ (1) Chicago
(7) Detroit @ (2) Anaheim
(6) San Jose @ (3) Vancouver
(5) Los Angeles @ (4) St. Louis
Additionally, with the NHL's regular season wrapping up, so are our Furry Fantasy hockey seasons.
redyoshi and
kaifox were the champions of Leagues A & B respectively, so congrats to them and best of luck to everyone next season!

Pittsburgh in 6
Pittsburgh to me is a no brainer in this series. They have shown a dominance this season only two other teams have shown all year. While a fully healthy Pens team might take it early, I can imagine Tavares and co will take a few games, as they've been playing so well as of late. Nabokov will have his work cut out for him. The Isles are getting there, which is awesome to see, compared to the same team for the last few years.
Player to watch - Jussi Jokinen: I think will turn heads this series, while others like Neal, Dupuis, etc might get as many points per game as the seasonal norm, I expect Jokinen to step it up in the playoffs, especially if he doesn't have to play the opponent's top shutdown lines.
...
Montreal in 7
This is going to be a long series, both teams seem to bring the same game aspect to the table. I can imagine a lot of one goal games in this series, especially due to the superb goaltending Ottawa's had all year long. Though Montreal I think might take it over the Sens, but only if the Habs find back that mentally of hard work and unity they had until they made the playoffs. If not, then perhaps Ottawa might just snatch it from them. I'm scared to see the shot blocking stat throughout this series.
Player to watch - Craig Anderson: He's been a beast this season (.941%), even if shortened due to injury. He's given this Ottawa team a chance everytime he's on the ice. He might be the biggest reason if Ottawa pulls an upset.
...
Washington in 7
Washington has been on a tear lately, but playoff hockey is a whole new season. It'll be dicey for sure, though honestly, if I look at this year I think the scale tips to Washington because of Tortorella. Yes he's won a cup before, etc, but he didn't really seem to have this NYR team under him for many many games this season. The Caps on the other hand seem totally into Oates' coaching ways and ideals. Ovechkin has been on fire lately, looking like he adapted to the offwing. The question mark to me is if the Caps' goalies can live it up, Lundqvist as always is rather solid.
Player to watch - Mike Ribeiro: As much as I was never for his antics back in his Montreal days, he's been the Caps' most consistent player all year. I see him continue that trend of points considering the Rangers will have their hands full sending their shutdown line against Ovi's line all series.
...
Boston in 5
The goalie battle of the eastern matchups this round. Rask VS Reimer (.929 vs .924.). Both teams are gritty and have a lot of muscle to throw around, which could make for an exciting series. This is not going to be a high scoring affair for sure, but what weighs me in on a Boston series win is the depth they have. They have 3 very very solid scoring lines that can be a threat at any time, while Toronto, to me, only has 2. Fourth line, well, will be fun to watch. Highest PIM, hits category series in the east. I must add that it's nice to see Toronto back in the playoffs, they beat the pundits.
Player to watch - Patrice Bergeron: He does it all, that's all there is to it. While he might not put up as many points as some of his teammates, this two way forward will bring so much to the table, and probably be in charge of being pitted against the Kessel line.

Western Conference
Chicago in 4
The Hawks this year.. what's not to say about it. Insane comes to mind. To get 77 points in 48 games is just amazing. I don't remember this kind of points total pace since before the pre-lockout era. Minnesota has a good set of players, and a great goaltender in Backstrom, but I think they need another year for the new additions to gel together fully. Most of Chicago's players have played together for years now, and have such a potent offense it's hard to not see them keep on taking the W every game this series.
Player to watch - Brandon Saad: One of the best rookies this year, and a treat to see play. He's my pick to keep an eye on this series and make something happen.
---
Anaheim in 7
I'll be honest on this one, this is probably the series I am the least knowledgable with. They both have the same highest points total (Getzlaf and Datsyuk at 49), they both have great goalies in Howard and newcomer Fasth (.923 vs .921). I just think that Detroit is past their prime at this point, while the Ducks are right in it. Secondary scoring will play a huge difference in this series, as both top lines are dangerous regardless. Special teams will play a big part of this series, which should tip it towards the Ducks to win.
Player to watch - Sheldon Souray: What a travel it's been for this guy. A journeyman who even saw time in the minors not even 2 seasons back, to being one of the top average ice time for the Ducks, right behind Beauchemin. Aging, but still has a howitzer from the point, watch him perform on the PP.
---
San Jose in 7
Very untimely injury to Vancouver's younger goaltender Schneider, whom while is day-to-day, has been the better Canucks goalie on paper. Luongo brings a lot to this team though, and can't be counted out. What tilts this in favour of San Jose is that personally, I don't know if the Canucks know what kind of hockey they want to play. They still seem to be searching for that hockey team identity on a regular basis, but when they -do- play the style of hockey that suits them (speed and tough forecheck IMO), they are dangerous. The Sharks seem to have the better depth down the middle, and as of right now, have the better goaltender in Niemi.
Player to watch - Joe Pavelski: Even not playing on the top line this guy just seems to be dangerous. He seems to have a knack at being the one that triggers the clutch play, or finishes it off. 7 game winning playoff goals in his career is nothing to laugh at either. Call it intuition, but I can see him break out this playoff series.
---
St. Louis in 7
This series will be the most evenly matched in the whole playoffs, I think. On one side you have the totally responsible, two way hockey and scoring by commitee from St. Louis, to the gritty Kings whom have quite the many top players who can rack up points. Funnily enough, for all the acclaims Quick and the three Blues' goalies have been having, a certain Jonathan Bernier has quietly been quite amazing in net for the Kings. This will definitely go to the wire, though I think the teamplay of St. Louis will come on top.
Player to watch - Vladimir Tarasenko: He might not have the pace he did at the start of the season, but when he's on his game, he's quite the sight to see. Dangerous considering he only plays an average of 13 minutes a game.

Eastern Conference:
Pittsburgh in 6
Ottawa was a wall with their goaltending, though the whole team has to be given kudos for sticking to the game without having to diverge into the 'sports politics' aspect (Eller hit/Prust name calling/Therrien focusing more on McLean than the game) which hurt Montreal bad. Pittsburgh has been great as they have been all season, but the Islanders I think will have sparked them to not sit back and think it's a lock. Ottawa can very well take a few games in this series against the Penguins if they keep up their stellar play and tight defense. Tilt ultimately goes to Pittsburgh though, with how they played against the Isles, they will be not wanting to repeat that kind of series again.
Player to watch: Jason Spezza - Is he ready? Is he not? McLean is doing the right thing in not telling much about how close Spezza is, but seeing him skate with his teammates before game one (even if he didn't make the trip to Pittsburgh) will be something the Sens will be uplifted if he does make a comeback. He might not even play, but it's a story that's interesting to follow.
...
Boston in 6
All I have to say was what a series between Boston and Toronto, and what a finish. It was good hockey to watch, many battles out there and grindy plays to get goals, which is something Boston should keep excelling at against New York. I'm expecting both teams' goals scored will drop in this tilt, as both teams have quite the goaltending assets to work with, Rask at Boston and Lundqvist in New York. Speaking of Lundqvist, talk about two shutouts in two must win games to finish off the Caps, stellar. The Rangers will be looking at him and their D to be top notch against the Bruins, it will be a series of very timely goals.
Player to Watch: Henrik Lundqvist - Can he continue his shutout streak to three games? And the last 3 games he's only allowed 2 goals, and the first game where he allowed two was brought to OT after the score being 1-1, he gives his team a chance to win everytime and will be instrumental if New York wants to pull an upset on the Bruins.
Western Conference:
Chicago in 6
It will not be as fast as the Wild's series, Chicago will have to keep doing what they are doing to win against a Detroit team whom, I'll admit, surprised me in beating the Ducks. Detroit is showing resiliency and have shown up to play, but will their defence be enough to contain the potent attack of not only the first line for the Hawks, but the rather strong scoring depth they have in the next few lines to boot? Time will tell, but if Detroit wants to stay sharp in this series, they will need Howard to be at his very very best.
Player to watch: Corey Crawford - A .950 save percentage in 6 games now, talk about hot. Question is, will he be able to keep that pace at all, especiallly with a Detroit team who has a few bigger players compared to the Wild who love to park right at the net and power their way to goals (Franzen comes to mind). He'll have to keep his head on his shoulders and not be distracted by players riding his crease.
...
San Jose in 7
I did not think San Jose would win their series in a sweep against the 'Nucks, but they have been great right out of the gate in these playoffs. Their top line have been great, their defense has been great at containing Vancouver to only 8 goals in 4 games. Los Angeles has been equally brilliant defensively, quick posting an insane .953% compared to his much lower regular season numbers. The only issue I have with LA for now is that apart from Richards with 7 points, no one has more than 4. As one line dimensional San Jose is at times, Los Angeles will need more from their best players to overthrow the Sharks this series.
Player to watch: Logan Couture - 6 points in his last 3 games, he's waking up after going pointless the start of these playoffs, and at 24, he can, and in my opinion, will boost the Shark's offense.
... Enjoy round 2! =D

I'm also a huge Red Wings fan, I would love to see us knock off Anaheim, but since they're a tough opponent, 7 games seems like the most logical thing to expect if we win.
