"your character here" commissions - like them? Dislike them?
I'm curious! I quite like them because I think they give a commissioner a more accurate feeling of what a commission will properly look like at the end, but having said that, I've never bought one though. I certainly like doing them because they are very easy and go very quickly for me (since sketching tends to be the hardest part of a commission for me, even though I have a file filled with random poses I've drawn over time...).
How do you guys feel? Do you like them or not, and why? Do you prefer them to be a flat price for the first person that jumps it, or an auction? I'm curious to get feedback on this.

I don't mind them aslong as there a regulatr commissions aswell xD
I don't usually participate in the auction ones since they can get up there out of my price range, but having an auto-buy or buy-out price is nice too (but may limit the potential of getting paid more). I can't stand people who complain about them as well, it's like dude stop policing what people do with their money : P
The only time when I dislike them is when it's an obvious trace either from anime or real porn (it's uncanny valley, near-perfect human bodies with an animal head stuck on it, so blatant haha).
oh my god the traces too... it's so hilarious when they're really perfect human bodies (with wobbly lines, always) and just like a weird horse or dog head pasted on
So it is quite boring and repetitive to be honest.
Half the poses are not bad though, sfw or nfw, because in a normal commission if the commissioner does not have a desired pose, it could turn into a pose that could have been for an auction or future auction if liked.
That's an argue a lot of artists fall back on every time a person dislikes it and has the option to speak their mind.
That's my two cents on this subject haha.
It definitely can get repetitive for sure hahah
When I do them, it's an auction. My start bids are usually $5 with levels of details added the more money is bid. But I have a buyout option that isn't more then it would cost for a commission. I try to keep it fair that way. Plus, I use it as an excuse to get out ideas and style I really want to draw but haven't had time/no one commission for. Though I do my YCHA bi-monthly depending on my workload, with two YCHA going at once. And I always have commission open for the people who want something else.
Now I don't like it when people do nothing but YCHA or there's is just a simple carbon copy of the most basic pin-up pose out there.
The buyout option is a really good idea, especially if it's comparable to a regular commission price. I'm the same as you, too, where I sometimes draw out something I've really wanted to do for a while and turn it into a YCH so I can have fun with it. c:
Sometimes I see the very same basic pose get spammed as a YCH and they just do like 10 of them?? Of the same pose?? For different people?? That was always super super weird to me. ' _'
Yeah, I personally never liked the auctions that got over $100. I mean, if it's for something equal to that price, that's fine. But when a basic pose with no background reaches $100, when the regular price for such a thing is only like say $40. Seems a bit unnecessary to me. I understand if it's done for like emergencies or fund raisers, that's fine. But just an everything day, I never liked those.
Personally, I dislike any sort of money grab scheme. Which is all something like that is. Doing the least amount of work, spamming it every where and getting as much as they can pump out of it. YCHA should be treated, at least I think, along the same lines of a artist's choice commission. Only difference is, the person buying already know what the pose will be. And has more say in what goes on depending on the artist's terms.
The only downside for me is when there's multiple slots and I don't feel the other characters fit mine. It's a not a complete deal breaker for me, though.
I think they'd be alot better if it was "Your character here, buy this spot"
If the artist was really feeling generous (like in a one character YCH) they could just say anyone who wants this its $X, that way no-ones disappointed and the artist still makes a good amount of money
I've seen some go CRAZY high, too, like... $400 high... on the one hand, I want to say "good for you, if someone's willing to buy it, go for it!" but on the other hand I am totally jealous of people that can pull in that kind of dough. XD
I can see why it would bother people if someone stopped doing normal commissions at all in any form in favour of YCHs, but it's just supply and demand, and not something to hold against the artist.
I actually feel ok about people who only do YCHs and cut out other commissions, because I can see how artists who are really busy with other things in life might only want to spend time on a sketch they already liked and decided to sell.
Generally speaking, I'd say I like YCH, either set price or auction, tho I'd probably rather buy a set price than try to win an auction because it's harder to expect how it will go and thus what to budget.
I find I'm leaning more towards set prices than auctions too. It's less stress and they seem to get taken a lot faster so I can get to work, rather than worrying about people bidding (and sometimes retracting those bids, and having to deal with that). 'w'
I admit though I've never done a YCH and I've never bought/bid on one. But I can certainly see the market for them and don't fault anyone who does. And really I find as long as the person selling and person buying is happy with the result, that's what really matters.
I can see the appeal of them, but I generally don't even really care to have my commissions done in crazy poses, and I'm never really specific as it is, so it's never something I think I'll partake in.
I like surprises, so I usually commission an artist and give them total artistic freedom haha. Part of the fun to me!
If more auctions were silent instead of latter, that'd make me a whole lot happier.
I rarely see YCHs as anything but auctions, so it baffles me why any consumer would willingly pay more for a product that they have less creative control over. A flat rate YCH is a whole lot more tolerable.
Since I also like to give the artist a free reign anyway also means I won't be surprised and can choose a character whose personality suits the pose (ie. flirty character in a flirty pose). Though I DO like surprises also, there is nothing quite like having a free reign commission turn out even better than you thought it would turn out.
I don't really care for multiple characters ychs where your character can be paired up with a random person, nor would I ever buy a picture with my character with an artist's character either, simply because I'm just not interested.
I haven't bought one in a while, but it's nice to know exactly what you're getting(not that i dont like the surprise of regular commissions!)
and, assuming it isnt an auction, most artists do them for cheaper then normal commissions hehe
it kinda sucks when the only way to commission an artist is via YCH auction.. cause that usually drops me right out.
as for selling them... they go pretty fast for me, and let me choose what i want to draw which is great cause i dont get a lot of commissions like that. none of my watchers have complained yet which is cool!
they go fast for me too, it's so nice! I can just get right to work and have them done quickly, which is the best. *w*
im not going to lie! i do a lot of them, but i would probably cut back on the amount i make if i got more commissions
i can open up for 5 flat coloured slots and only one will get taken, but if i do 5 preposes... they're gone in a few hours haha
I don't do auctions, though. Continually checking back to see if I've lost it or not is kind of a pain and I usually just go find a different artist if I feel like buying something. That extra step of hassle just makes me say "meh, nm". That probably makes me sound awful.
I'm not a fan of multi-slot ones. The idea of "pairing" someone random stranger's character with mine is just off-putting. But I don't buy porn anyway, so my opinion on that one probably doesn't count for much, lol.
The only thing about YCHs that ever actually annoys me is how many of them seem to be either highly referenced from official anime art or else just outright traced from a photo. That's a no thanks.
oh man it's always so easy to tell when they're traced too... especially if the anatomy is PERFECT but the lines are really weird and wobbly, or if they just have an animal head pasted on :I
Sometimes I'm bummed because I'll look at the sketch and think it looks really good, than look at their finished work and go "ehhh, the random sketch was much better." But that won't be an issue for you.
Problem is people go crazy bidding, many times a YCH goes for twice what a commissioned piece would and that....is just silly to me.
Still over all I like them and think they can be good, but they tend to favor people with much more disposable income.
This comment just gave me a thought, I don't usually like multiple-slot auctions but if it was a SFW, with a ton of characters hanging out on a beach or something, that could be fun 'w'
The only ones I don't like are couple pictures where they have separate auctions. I don't like those because I'm afraid I'll lose one and then I wouldn't know what to do with the one I won. >_<;
Though I saw one interesting approach to it. Person has separate auctions unless someone was willing to bid so and so amount, in which case they would get both characters and the auctions combined into one.
I mean, you're selling a piece where you've take away creative control from the commissioner. I've seen several where the artist stalwartly refuses to change details and that the piece must be a specific species with a specific gender with a specific body type. Why should that ever cost more than a normal commission you sell? As far as I'm concerned, it's pretty dishonest, IMO.
Not even to get into the horrible territory of multiple slot YCH pieces (particularly adult ones). Why would I ever want to pay someone else way over the odds basically for the "privilege" of prostituting my character out to someone I probably don't know at all? I'd only ever do it if I could get all the slots and I'm not ever going to do that. I'll just get a similar piece from someone else.
I know what I'm willing to pay, and a lot of that is way too high a price.
The multiple slot ones, the more I think about it the more odd it is, hahah... maybe some people *like* the randomness I guess? I can't imagine it. '_'
I fucking HATE people who bitch about them thought. Especially when they come on your auction to do so.
people bitching, man, that's the worst. I see the same thing on adoptables, people feel the need to butt in and be like "WOW I HATE THESE!" that's nice, asshole, they clearly aren't for you then.
