Just go with your instincts. I am not sure about the cross dressing female though. It's hard to pull that off (no pun intended) in a fursuit. You might be frustrated going that route.
I remember telling my wife that I was either going go build a suit, or buy one. When she found out how expensive they were, I ended up making my own. Cutter Cat came out really well, I think. There are some things I would change next time, but overall, I was pleased. It was a pain doing it though, and took a lot of time researching. I even did my own ref sheet. eep! That was scary!
*blushes* I had some help, but not a great deal. wolfaya helped some with the foam sculpting of the cheeks and ears. Her and a friend did the sewing. I foamed and furred the head and feet and designed and cut out the pattern for the fur. He's a "baggy" suit. He is supposed to look kind of frumpy and shaggy. Here's a video to show you how much room is in my suit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvU466TYWxY The video was shot last year at Rocket City Fur Meet.
My suit is so big, that I am just a shade over 6 foot tall and 250 pounds. I had a friend who was 6'6" and about 300 pounds wear it without any problem.
