Tonaba Kickstarter Project -- wordvomit/faq(ish)
So I wanted to write a journal talking a little bit about this game, Tonaba, which you may have seen snippets of in my gallery over the last few days!
I'm going to be talking about Tonaba, my role in the project, and a little bit on the basics of Kickstarter for those who want to know more about that.

So first and foremost, About Tonaba
Tonaba has been likened to Magic: the Gathering minus the luck factor. Rather than selling packs of randomized cards, Tonaba will sell individual cards so that you can personalize your strategy and playing style without wasting money and space on cards you'll never use.
Alongside the unique style of playing, Tonaba also features a very unique story! Rather than working with mages and warriors, Tonaba deals with a world which is governed by "authors", who use "ink" to write their minions into existence and gain power. The themes of Tonaba include magic, steampunk, artistry, and fantasy. The characters involved are bright and full of depth -- from the angelic butterfly-obsessed fluttermage to the macabre carrion fetishist.
There are 150 cards currently ready for production. They have been playtested thoroughly and are ready to go! But it doesn't end there. Expansion packs of all sorts are just waiting to be polished off and added to the already wide variety of awesome cards.
My role in the project
The art of Tonaba will feature beautiful (in my opinion, anyway) art by some really fabulous furry artists (including myself!).
This is honestly one of the biggest projects I've had the honor to work on, and I would love to see it succeed. I've been hugely enthusiastic about this thing ever since I was first approached to be a part of the project. I will be posting some of the art I've done for Tonaba in my gallery, so you guys can see the sort of work I'll be doing.
Never funded a Kickstarter before?
It can be kinda intimidating. I wanted to reach out to those of you who have never worked with Kickstarter and want to know a little more about the process. Everything I've added in quotes to this journal is taken directly from Kickstarter's help & FAQ section. You can look for yourself if you have any other questions! c:
So I think the biggest concern out there is whether your donation will go to waste. What if, for instance, you back the project for $5, but Tonaba never reaches it's goal and is a huge disastrous failure? The awesome thing is, you won't ever have lost that $5.
The money you pledge is not deducted from your account or charged to your card unless and until the project reaches it's complete goal. That means you never need to fear making a donation and having it go to waste. Essentially the donation will only be accepted if the project is a success.
When is my card charged?
If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged. That's why we call them pledges.
That's all well and good, you say. But what the heck keeps this guy from running off with my money, if the project reaches its goal?
Kickstarter legally obligates project leaders to fulfill all rewards or refund backers who did not receive their reward.
Is a creator legally obligated to fulfill the promises of their project?
Yes. Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. (This is what creators see before they launch.) We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.
Besides,
arcanethewoof has got a pretty kick-ass plan. As you can see on the Tonaba kickstarter page, everything is laid out -- all the projected expenditures, plans for production, etc.
But there's a lot going on behind the scenes, as well. Arcane has been busy playtesting all of the cards currently in the game -- and he's still working on playtesting more to come in the future! He's also put together a lot of resources for everyone working on the project, and has pulled together a very professional and streamlined pathway to success.
I wish I could show you guys some of the awesome stuff he's done -- from bringing all of the project participants together in a modern file-sharing forum so that we can work openly together, to drawing up detailed and highly professional contracts for everyone involved in order to maximize the chances for success.
This isn't something we've just pulled out of thin air -- this is a big project that's been in the works for a while. I'm super excited to see it launch, and I hope you guys are too.
So if you have even one dollar to throw at us, we would really appreciate it. We're anticipating that at least half of our funding will come from small donations, so every little bit helps!
And for my friends outside of the US and UK? You can donate too! Kickstarter accepts all major forms of credit/debit cards. c:
Anyway, I hope I haven't gotten on your nerves with all this babble! I'm just super excited about this, and I think it has a ton of potential to be an awesome, addictive game.

I REALLY hope it does well and word spreads. I've been talking to him the whole time he's been developing this and the amount of effort he's put into it is truly crazy impressive.
