Well "simply"? I don't think any other show got that much attention in this fandom...

That's right, there a lot of pokemon stuff. Although I think it a little different because (as you said) there are a huge amount of games and a more than 15 years old anime. And the number of pokemon is slighty bigger than the number of pony-characters!

I totally don't complain about mlp, as I am a fan of the show myself. But this exorbitant amount of artwork scares me!

Ayes, It's not my thing. rather annoys me when i see pron stuff of it. I disliked the show myself. Sadly, it seems to be like pokemon. it'll be around somewhere at some point. Though I approve of the pokemon stuff, as you might guess from my name.

Sonic stuff is also popular, but I agree that there's just an insane amount of it. A few pictures here and there, that's fine, but some artists have completely dropped their usual subjects in favor of pony stuff. It also makes it tough to search for equine stuff that isn't MLP.

Oh yeah... Everytime I checked e621, almost half of the page (seriously!) was full of mlp stuff.

the reason it gained so much popularity was due to 4chan, at least partly. the other half, seems to be around basic character development and plot and such. I of course, can barely stand it, and what makes it worse for me, is that this has to be THE fad of the decade, and its because its a show that's doing what animated TV should have been doing more years ago.

dont get me wrong, r34, if done well is great, but theres simply too much. its on par with krystal, renamon, and sonic characters at this point. it's rare there's worthwhile to look at.

and the problem spans past furries, into its own territory, and its everywhere on the internet. they say if you don't like something, dont look at it, right? kinda hard not too when its not just on furry sites, but also in youtube/ytp videos(without warning btw), tumblr, and im not talking about just rule 34, obviously.

I'm not going to bash on the show, obviously since i haven't seen it, and refuse to. but i certainly dont like it...really don't like it, all because of its gross popularity. There's also the backlash affect, with a negative outlook drawing more attention to it, thus creating positive feedback. need i repeat 4chan?

TL;DR its pretty much like pokemon, while being slightly less gimmicky, and slightly more...'friendly'...and being turbo powered by the internet.

I like the show, but yeah, there's a ton of stuff. But there's a ton of Pokemon and Sonic stuff too (as people have mentioned already).

The short version, I like the show, want nothing to do with it outside the show, Ponys are either drawn by hacks or it's taking away from good art, Hate the fan-dumb

...I watched season 1 & 2 and liked it, it's just the (if you ask me) sick amount of fan-stuff.

A few reasons.

1: The style is simple and fun to emulate.

2: It was well written and didn't treat the audience like a bunch of kids.

3: Horses.

4: There aren't many GOOD shows on TV nowadays.

Yup. TV is so dull nowadays that when someone puts effort into something that turns out to be fun and funny without resorting to "it's so gross I have to force a chuckle because I don't know what else to do" it's a giant hit.

Plus, it is a show that turned a sickeningly little girl ONLY show into something that is enjoyable to all.

The last two episodes of Season 2 are especially evident of this, what with a flat out succubis showing up.

I'm down with ponies.
