what is DOMA's main purpose? cuz I just heard the name

what WAS* DOMA's main purpose. Basically it denied NUMEROUS federal rights and benefits to gay marriage couples who got legally married in states where gay marriage is legal. The basic rights and benefits that normal married couples get.

No, There can be no -federal- law banning gay marriage. Instead each state has its own laws defining gay marriage or civil unions or just not at all. What DOMA did was impose a federal law that stated gay couples who got LEGALLY married in a state CAN NOT receive the same -federal- rights and benefits that normal married couples got, like tax breaks and hospital rights. Just now though the Supreme Court ruled that DOMA was unconstitutional.
