Early critic screenings are generating a positive respond to this film. Thank God - I've been realy looking forward to this and I was deathly afraid that a lot of idiot critics would take that film school "story is more important than anything else" bullshit too far to heart. The positive reaction means that critics are either treating this film the way films should be treated, or the story is a TON better than expected.
Either way, it's looking good. BRING IT ON!!!!

Giant robots, monsters, and the voice of Glados.
I don't see how this could go wrong. Del Toro never disappoints on story, he's go a very unique visual aesthetic, and this is a film that screams for his brand of crazy. Best case scenario, it's a movie that is better than the sum of its parts (Independence Day). Worst case. the movie is mediocre (Prometheus) without having to live up to the pedigree a franchise develops.
This said, I'm thankful that early screening results are positive.
The only thing I hold against him is Pan's Labyrinth. The story was too jumbled to make sense, and a plot was ignored in favor of visuals.
Art house movie generally sway critics, and Pan's Labyrinth was art house. My issue is that it was up its own butt with pretension. That may please a critic, but I couldn't get behind it.
At least when the majority of the big critics are in agreement. When it's mixed the critical opinions aren't worth anything.
Along comes a unique movie, and they have a knee-jerk reaction to it. It is different, so it must be good. That is human nature 101. If you eat cake every day, it is no longer special. On the other hand, I love cake. A movie every other month means I don't develop a tolerance for tropes. Yes I can see some things coming, but it doesn't take away from the experience.
If you want proof of this wait for the award nominations, and see how many of them are bizarre little art house pieces.
Pan's Labyrinth was an artichoke. The cake addled critics loved it, I could see the beauty in it, but it still tasted funny to me. The critics should be one source of information, but their bias is not for everyone. I'd like them to like what I watch, but they also hate so much of what I like that I've insulated myself from their negativity.
