If your water pump isn't leaking, I wouldn't bother with that. I'd just start with the thermostat for the moment and see where that goes. Maybe pull it out if you've got more free time than money and test it.

OP
the thermostat is relatively new, and when driving at 55mph the guage dropped to below half

Oh, well in that case, it may very well be a bad fan clutch if it overheats standing still but can regulate its temperature while moving.

OP
fan clutch seems to be fine, tested it today, and it has plenty of resistance

That's odd, then. Now, if you leave it parked, does the heater work? Do both the upper and lower radiator hoses heat up?

OP
i cannot safely reach the lower hose, top hose gets hot, have yet to check the heater as it has been hot lately

Well that's pretty freaky, then. Never been great at remote diag, but I'm at a loss as to what's happening here.

OP
yep, taking it to a mechanic friendin a few weeks

OP
was losing coolant from a leak that only seeped through a split weld under acceleration, then it really split

Ah, that's an interesting one, then. But once you've got enough air into the system, your water pump is going to be practically useless. Glad you got it sorted, though!

Like C Rex said, Start with the thermostat. In addition to being the most common problem, it's cheap and easy to replace. Hoses and belts don't need to be replaced unless they're broken, so save your money on those as well. good luck!

OP
then its either the fan clutch, thermostat or water pump
