its normally the oils on their skin, what are your symptoms?

basically it feels like i have a sinus infection that won't go away. i'm on antibiotics for a past infection at the moment, but i've been getting worse. thinking it's hay fever, but i'm not sure.

There are ways to deal with this without having to give him up, don't worry! You can switch to a paper bedding (like carefresh) or use fleece instead with more frequent cleanings. Some people who are allergic to their rodent pets just have to handle them less. Wear long sleeves and maybe even gloves whenever you play with him and put down a sheet on the surface he's getting exercise on. Make that area somewhere that's outside your bedroom (or where ever you spend the most time) and keep up with vacuuming to keep dander low. Make sure to wash your hands frequently. Store his hay outside the house, like in the garage. I would say keep it outside, but you don't want harmful bugs to make home in there. It would best if you could get someone else to clean his cage, but if not, at least clean it outside, every time. Have one of your family members put all the hay into paper bags for you. That way, when he needs more hay you can just grab a paper bag and put it in his cage. He will have fun tearing the bag and eating the hay and you won't have to deal with the dust.

Read EVERYTHING on this website, and google to find even more. I would hate to see a good animal have to go back to a scary and unhealthy pet store because of this. Try all these tips before giving up, for both your sakes. You seem like such a loving owner and I want him to stay where he is loved.

tried fleece, he sheds too much, carefresh is like 15 bucks a bag on amazon (LOL NO WAY), and we're making single-serving bags of hay for him and storing them in the garage so i only have to use minimal handling to feed him. my parents have already refused to clean the cage saying it's my responsibility and stuff, even though i'm suffering (real nice, right?). i'm probably going to use a painting mask when cleaning his cage and feeding. petting and handling doesn't seem to be an issue, it's just feeding and being in the same room soon after.

With newspaper bedding you really need to replace it either every day or every other day. Yes, carefresh can be expensive (though it's not nearly that much if you buy it from somewhere like wal-mart), but you only need to replace it once every 5 days to a week, so I guess you just have to pick your poison there. Wearing a mask should help while cleaning. I'm not sure how big your cage is, but wearing a mask and gloves should help. Take it outside, just dump it really quick into a bag or directly into an outdoor trash can, maybe hose it off then you're done. I take it you aren't keeping his cage in your bedroom? If petting and handling isn't giving you any problems hopefully you'll find a method of cleaning and feeding that works for you. I'm not sure if guinea pigs can be litter trained, but maybe that's something to look into. Teach him to only go in one corner of his cage, might make cleaning easier for you. I would say be prepared to suffer for a few weeks while you try some new things out, but hopefully you'll find a good pattern and be able to control the worst of it. I'm rooting for you and Tater!

Well, you really, really need to be doing trust training every day. How are you even cleaning out the cage if you aren't taking him out of it? You need to find some way to lure him into another area so you can clean it properly. Put his cage in the bathtub and force him out or get a travel cage to put him in while you clean it. This is very important. What kind of trust training are you doing?

i was told at the store he's already trained. obviously that was a load of shit because he's bit me for trying to handle him before...idk what to do. i don't have a travel cage.

I just said it, I'll say it again. Trust training. You said in one of your previous journals that you had done a bunch of research before getting a guinea pig. Never, never, never trust anything a pet store employee tells you. You need to even learn to sex them yourself because people are often sold the opposite gender they were told. You should really get a travel cage asap. Not only are they necessary for proper cleaning you need one in case Tater gets sick and needs to be taken to the vet.

Never say you don't know what to do. In this day and age the answer is at a click of a button. Have you signed up for the goosemoose pet forums like I mentioned before? They will give you much more detailed answers than I am giving you. Pet stores mean death to many, many animals and I really want to help you help Tater, but I don't see you doing as much as you should be. Did you think it would all be simple to own a pet? If the time comes when you need to give him up I would just hate for him to go back to what may be a death sentence. I would hate that for the both of you. If you're getting overwhelmed and you don't think you can handle this that's FINE. Don't feel like a bad person or a bad owner for that. One of the best pet owners out there know when it's time to move on. Should that time come you need to get in touch with your local shelters (many of them don't advertise that they take small animals so you need to call and ask them), aspca, guinea pig rescues that may be in your area, or any friends you know who may want him.

currently he's on newspaper bedding (that i've shredded myself and gotten numerous blisters from XD labor of love, i swear...) and i used up the hay that was in the opened bag the pet store gave me, so that should help.
