For those of you who dont know, I'm an English major. Midterms are coming up and I just got slammed with papers- no problem though! The more practice I get with my writing the more confident about it I get, and most of my professors are really inspiring.
Now- I say most very lightly. I have one whom I DESPISE- and I'm going to rant about it now.
So, my really good philosophy buddy Jacob (who's incredibly intelligent, and I really respect him as a writer and soon-to-be-philosopher) get paired up for a mid term project in one of my creative literature classes. We worked hard on our project- trying to make it unique and interesting for the class.
However, my professor caught wind of some of our research material being for another class and, for some reason, this displeased her. We didn't even have to source anything, it certainly wasn't required, but for some reason it put a bug up her ass. Anyway- when we present our project during class, she rudely interrupted us constantly, rolled her eyes when we were trying to speak, covered her eyes, bowed her head, tapped her pen, and in essence was very distracting to the whole class and clearly wasn't listening anyway.
So, we finish and she goes on a rant about how we "didn't put thought or effort into this project and it upsets her that none of us are taking her class seriously." At that point I wanted to punch her in the mouth. We put good effort into that project and she has the audacity to tell us that and accuse us of having poor work ethic in her class. If I recall, I graduated high school 2 years ago and I pay this bitch to treat me with a little bit of respect.
She ended on the note that she was going to revamp the sillybus (mispelled intentionally- haha silly bus pun yuck yuck) for the fourth time and that "whereas you will not be penalized for your lack of effort on this project, I dont feel the need to give you any credit and the whole class needs to cancel their current projects and redo them alone."
Needless to say I was furious for the rest of the day, but Jacob (who remained completely calm and collected the entire time) eventually talked me down and Kit (Genius writer and I respect him a great deal. Also the only other gay guy in my circle of friends) said something very beautiful to me, and it's partly the reason I'm baying to the moon about this drama-llama bullshit.
"You cant worry about it. I think your writing is genius and as long as you have belief in yourself then you'll be fine. Remember that you have to know the most horrible of things before you can grasp the beautiful, and then you have to understand both of them before you can actually grow."
It sounds kind of cheesy but when you hear someone actually say it to you (from the top of their head I might add) it's really powerful. I choked up a bit.
Ok soap box time is over! <3
Also if you ever want to talk literature or philosophy let me know. I dork out about that shit obviously. It's amazing how nerdy you realize you are when you review the people you hang out with.

Personally i love my current comp teacher, while hes a little boring, hes friendly, calm, and sometimes hilarious. Also as long as you show that you've tried, hes easy going. Its the first comp class where i enjoy doing my work in.
Sounds like my humanities professor. He's really an amazing teacher and challenges you in a way that makes you want to succeed. That's the kind of professor that every school should have.
I forewarn you that this is a rather deep philosophy assignment so it might sound somewhat...out there.
"The reality is, at face value, we are all slaves, in one way or another, to society, which provides us with the tools and resources we need to thrive. Freedom in that regard does not exist, for if we were to liberate ourselves from everything in which we depend on to live, we would not sustain ourselves in full. We buy our food from markets and keep ourselves from starving, and we chop our wood from trees which keeps us from freezing. This perfect circle keeps us all in balance and disperses the weight of the universe over lifetimes and generations versus the cosmic pressure of a single point. However, freedom exists as a driving force: a current that flows through our minds and delivers hope as blood flows through our veins to deliver energy. I once lived without this current, and that is when I became aware of the cage that we all reside in, and that's when it became a prison.
I was born a see: planted in mud with no water or sun. My parents were poor. I didn't know it then but I know it now. I look back on that trashy world, the roof leaking tears of mold and the walls shaking like old men when thunder boomed, and I see myself huddled against the furnace,; clutching my only friend of stuffing and stitches. At the time my mind would not begin to wrap its delicate thoughts around the shackles that held me tightly ensnared. In my mind, I was just me, and my mother and father loved me dearly as they do today."
That's a chunk toward the beginning. The assignment was on the concept of freedom in regard to our interpretation of it and it's relevance to our lives. Personally, I believe that we are trapped by variables that are beyond our control and therefore all born as birds inside a cage. I elaborated on this in my paper by relating it to my life growing up and how I have become the person that I am today.
Would love to know what you think. I cant give out the whole paper yet since I haven't gotten it back from my professor and this is the only passage I have saved on this computer unfortunately.
I think it would have taken about 6 espresso drinks and a couple hallucinations to write like that ^_^'
its very good! I would like to read the rest of it, but this seems pretty awesome so far!
Sadly, although we pay for their services, you're often going to run into a professor with a *heavy* superiority complex. There are certainly ones out there that delight in torturing and belittling their students. However, in contrast, there are fantastic professors who care and lead some rviting discussions.
And, I'm always up for literature discussion, though philosphy is not my thing. I'm graduated from college now (literature major-- great major for me, but bad for locating related jobs).but I still make it a point to continually read. I just finished "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin.
A literature major sounds amazing. What is your focus? Classics or more contemporary?
My focus was more on "Classical" literature, and leaned a bit more toward British, although I studied more contemporary and American literature as well (and a bit of Russian). My thesis was on Byronism, in particular, the impact of the Byronic hero.
When most people say classic American Literature my brain always throws up Mark Twain in my head, and whereas I greatly respect his influence as well as his work, it's not something I would ever really enjoy reading. I found it increasingly dull, and having it constantly shoved down my throat in highschool only made it worse. Now, Edgar Allen Poe? I have a leather bound tome of everything he ever wrote and I reference it's genius constantly.
I've tried to research Byronism but I honestly cant find anything on it! Its a term I've never heard before (which shows you how lax my high school was and how hit and miss my university is). However, from what I've gathered, it was a European romantics movement in response to Byron's actual writing prose. But my sources could be wrong and if you've done a thesis on it I'm quite certain you know more than I do.
The Byronic hero is a somewhat tragic figure, and an antihero. He rather doesn't fit in with society, is doomed to destroy the ones he loves, etc. Yet, something about him usually fights for those weaker than himself. He is often a brooding character, and is often shown in relfection.
Modern Examples: The Terminator (as depicted in the second film) qualifies as a Byronic hero. Cloud Strife and Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy VII (especially Vincent in Dirdge of Cerebus) both qualify.
Literay Examples: Heathcliff from Wuthering Hights, Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre and Lestat from the Vampire books by Anne Rice (though a more modern example) all qualify ;)
Ack, went off on a huge tangent ;) A lot of thesis papers need not be onverly long.. mine was a little shy of thirty pages (and I recieved the full points). I have a friend who's was about 100 though ;). In some ways, the length depends on your topic.
