Curling rat claw advice ?

OK! so my old boy Ni has well his two pinky toe nails ( outer front paw finger) curling in to his finger tip.
It basically makes a round end to his toe and only just started happening, I clip his and Rookies nails from time to time because I'd almost swear that black rats have sharper tougher (never file down) claws...
Anyway I have two bricks under my water bottles but well..Ni is like a blob he's only active if its to grab food. So I guess now that he's older he's slowing down so much the bricks don't even help.
But anyway...is there a really safe method of trimming curled nails ? or just kinda clip and hope the wick isnt as long as the nail is ?
Also any idea how to not have it keep curling on him ?? ;;

I've never clipped my rat's nails, sorry ;; Try playing with him and making him run around?

I've heard making pumice stone perches can help. I don't trim my girls nails, too tiny :( maybe put their food in a place he will have to climb to get to, and put pumice/bricks along the way so he has to use them

sometimes you can shine a light through the claw and see where the quick is at?

What Hanazawa said is correct. However, if that doesn't work, your best bet is to trim down about halfway and/or to normal size, and have quikstop on hand. Yes, you may nick the quick, but it only hurts for a second and then they don't notice it anymore - a lot less discomfort then walking around with curled nails.
