Are your markings like stripes? you could airbrush dyes into the fibers and let them dry.. air brush equipment is very inexpensive and some hobby shops even offer loan/rentals..
you can also use the dyes to give your head character by giving high lites like cheeks(rose) teeth that look real etc...
Definitly airbrush. I've taken airbrush classes, and certain types of the airbrush paints that are desined for clothing would work very well. I'm making my pattern with the fur.
don't use acryllic paints! They'll ruin the brush. There are special types of paints [I get mine at Hobby Lobby] that are specifically designed for airbrushes and do not have to be diluted
