Graphics - If you've seen any of the popular toss puzzle games, you know what the expect. Puzzle De Bowling is no different. You have the chibi style characters tossing colorful objects. In this case, it's bowling balls. Everything is well presented and easy to recognize. While puzzle games are not known for their amazing graphics, the visuals is this game are decent enough to get the job done.
Sound - The sound is a mixed bag. There are definitely some catchy tunes in this title. The bowling sounds are also well done. From the sound the ball makes as it hits the lane to the pins crashing, the theme is perfectly set. The character's voices, however, leave much to be desired. Although the characters only really talk after you have completed a level, some of the voices do not fit their character at all. The lion character, Synauther, sounds like an 8 year old boy. In fact, most the voices sound like they got voice talent from a 1st grade homeroom. But this is a puzzle game, so I guess cutesy stuff like that is what they were going for.
Gameplay - Take Bust-A-Move, add a moving shooter, take away wall bounces, and add the ability to curve your shot....and you pretty much have Puzzle De Bowling. Surprisingly, this creates a very fun and alternative to the bubble busting dragons. You are presented with bowling balls of many colors. The idea is to shoot the bowling ball at the pins in front of you and match 3 or more (sound familiar?). After so many shots, the pins will drop down a level. If you don't match 3 or more, the bowling ball turns into a pin. You can choose to gutter a ball, but the line of pins will automatically push forward. If your pins push past the line at the bottom, you bottom out. The neat part about the game is the ability to curve your shots. At first, you might end up going at this game with simply straight shots. But once you start to utilize the curving of the ball you will realize the many options available to you. The game uses 3 buttons. The first button is the shooter, which is placed in the center. The buttons on the left and right are what curve your shot. Press either button once to move your cursor and create the appropriate curve. Press it again to move the cursor further forward to determine where the ball will begin to curve at. Press shoot and walla. Also in this game are Super Shots. You have a meter located on the left. When it fills completely you have access to your character's Super Shot. Press down on the joystick to equip the shot. This can be anything from an explosive bowling ball, a ball that will change a lot of pins to one color, or a giant bowling ball that will mow down an entire line. Although characters share some Super Shots, most have their own. You can choose to go through a puzzle mode or verse the computer or a friend. Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll find this game an addicting alternative to Bust-A-Move.
Overall (B+) - Like Bust-A-Move? Try this game. It gives a neat spin on the genre with a cool theme. Plus it's got a well dressed anthro lion. Can't go wrong there ;)
