hard drive failure ;(

So my 3 terabyte external hard drive that was acting as my backup when i rebooted my compy 3 days ago failed D:. and i lost 4 years worth of stuff iv gotten in the process , including all the stuff for my college atm :<.
There are ways to recover data off those things, if you can afford it. Unless you put it in a microwave, it's probably not a lost cause.
Internal Windows System logs say bad sectors.
SeaTools passes the device on a short basic test, but fails immediately on a long basic test. None of the sectors report back, starting with 0 and going as long as you run the tool.
The drive -is- reporting serial # and such to the controller, but beyond that nothing gets by.
I offered to take a look, so he's gonna ship it my way and I'll probably crack the enclosure and try to mount it with a USB->IDE or USB->SATA converter. First check in Linux, if that doesn't work I'll SpinRite the thing in hopes that I can at least restore it long enough to get copies of the data off. But I'm all ears on any additional thoughts you might have.
