Went to Furfright with
o-kemono and
silvanoir . Lost early in the poker tournament, and glad for it as I decided to check out the Masquerade which was an absolute blast. I was especially appreciative of the skit by
kiffa_kitmouse and
sedge as well as the dance routine by
nekomon. Must buy the DVD next year.
I had a discussion with one of the artists there. This person clearly wishes to sell his/her works. However he/she does not buy anything from other artists. Money isn't the problem, as this person has a decent amount of savings available.
Obviously he/she does not have any obligation to buy anything, but it sounded strange to me how this artist is trying so hard to sell his/her artwork, yet steadfastly declines to buy anything from other artists. If everybody had his/her attitude, nobody would sell anything at the con.
Would it really hurt that much to buy a few prints for $10?

I bought art from others this year for that reason.... obviously, if I want things I can draw them myself, but I like supporting other artists.
And yeah, even if I knew how to draw art I would still buy some to show my support to other artists. I know some of them are very business-minded but still...
I sold in Artists Alley on friday, and just sort of hung out randomly for the rest of the con.
On the topic of the artist that wants to sell but won't buy from other artists...
I wholeheartedly agree with you. If you are trying to make a name for yourself in this fandom, or in the art world in general, making links and connections with other artists and supporting the arts (obviously) is very important and will factor in to how well your wares sell. A little gesture can go a long ways, and attitude can really make a difference when trying to sell.
To be honest, I've met most of my friends in this fandom through either commissioning them, or doing a commission for them. It's a great way to get to know stuff about a person. And if you're trying to get your foot in the door and don't have the money to commission others, trading can make a great way to build links too and show that you support others' work.
It's a shame that artist feels that way...
