This makes me feel better to know my slow progression is much due to the same things! : } Thank you for sharing this!
(Also, the only time I've traced were two photos of myself. And that was for a personal experiment. )
-For the longest time I would never reference, but then I started doing studies of human anatomy and I needed references for that. They certainly helped me with my known realism. (I used to do portraits which absolutely had to be referenced, so I've quite been using references since the start.)
I started drawing realism first, but I couldn't get toony for the life of me. ; } took me years to finally get some nice toony movements and flow going! So, in this I salute you for doing so well!
I do believe I've looked at a few tutorials. Well, the colouring ones for digital, maybe, but this is curiosity, why not try something new!
Either way, MY progression has been slow in the realm of digital, yours has actually been a fair bit faster.
It's not a contest, do it at your pace. You will always have people interested in your work! : }
*What I mean by never reference, I mean never reference for anatomy. I tried to do it all by memory reference only, but sometimes the ol' brain and paper just wouldn't match up. So I had to look up references, took me years to finally do it though!*
Meow! : } Thank you for keeping on by the way! It's inspiring to me and Yes indeed I do! It takes me longer now that my joints are bad, but I was pretty good when I was younger (around 9-13.) I used to do black and white portraits for people.
Maybe if I just practice some more my joints will get used to it? I dunno.
Well
A. You were trying to go to school, but so easily sulked on that, 'cause it didn't go your way, with no bump or hitch in the road.
B. The field you want to go into is highly competitive [I don't give a flying ratsass who you know in the field], and yet you refuse to do things that will progress your skill level.
You're not going to magically known the proportions, motion, ect of any animal--- or suddenly have a full grasp on the human form, from absolutely nothing.
You sound like you're placing pride, and refusing to help better your-self.
There's a reason why every artist before you has done things they way they have.
Sure, there are major variations, but, it all boils down to simple observation and study.
Being self-taught doesn't mean you ignore your subject matter.
The meaning--- is if you're honestly serious about perusing art as a career, you really need to suck it.
funny, because I'm doing just fine learning proportions on my own, and that's how i like to learn. people have different ways of learning, and its not always staring at another photo and copying elements from it into your own work.
i'm still planning to go to school, but i have to go to adult school first to get the requirements to apply, like the 70% average and some courses i never finished. havent said anything about it because this plan is years away.
and id appreciate it if you would take this to notes if you are planning on replying with a bitch attitude, which is completely unnecessary and at this point i am considering blocking, because im not quite sure if you're trying to get a rise out of me or what.
i would also just like to add (because i forgot to) that you really shouldnt make assumptions about what i am/will/or will not be doing, like the school thing, because you really have no idea what im planning to do. XD
At any rate:
I never said anything about copying anything.
However, ask any artist anywhere, even read Richard Williams [who you should be very familiar with if you aren't], and they'll all tell you it stats will life drawing.
You don't need to be that sort of artist, it's the base work. A building base may be cement, but it can be glass, wood, ect.
Besides, you're Canadian.
It's more than expected for you to block the vulgar American!
FUCKYEAHAMURICA!
Good art though, quite wonderful.
thank youu!
