My lucky day, my last comic-con, and a fur question
12 years ago
From the Desk of Jack the Gorilla....
All right, in that order then...
The 25th turned out to be a lucky day for me. My dental check up yielded no problems and I'm due back in six months. (both times this year all thanks to flossing!) Then the scratch off ticket that my grandma bought me (she gives me a five dollar scratch off ticket each week for helping with the groceries) gave me $10. So doing good so far. Then at work I was informed that I would be an acting assistant manager for a satellite store we will be opening for the christmas season, starting Oct. 1st. So more pay as well as smaller staff and not having to worry about some of the headaches that were going to come with my electronics department supervisor position. So a great day.
By contrast today just sucked! I had difficult children at my second job. After a year with not so much as a scratch I was bit three times today by horses! The third one really hurt and I was chastised by my college/instructor for yanking the lead rope as I told the horse "no". Put me in a bad mood for most of the day.
As for my last comic con. This past weekend I enjoyed the Wizard World Comic Con. This is the third year that wizard took care of the Ohio-con. I miss when it was independent! I guess the best way to describe is would be with a pros and cons list...
Pros, More cosplayers, more prominent guests, bigger
Cons; More expensive, more people, less comics, few comic venders were more expensive.
There was a depressing pall cast over the event (regardless of meetin Jason David Frank) That with the extra space there were fewer comic book vendors. The entire reason I went! No one bothered with their dollar stock or cheaper. Mile High didn't show which is a bad sign. They have gotten so far away from their roots, what am I to do for a COMIC convention! So I spent a little extra money and next year the money I'd waste on a ticket will just go to comics on ebay.
Finally. As a furry, I am a bit socially awkward. (see I started the idea with a broad and sweeping generalization!) But there are some furs that I've chatted with a few times and a few I've met a few times. How do you become friends, or broach the subject of hanging out with out seeming to be a facebook or in this case FA stalker? There are a few people/furs I respect and would love to ride shotgun with on just one adventure they seem to frequently take. How do you broach teh subject without seeming to invite yourself or being a pesky tag along when you want to learn more about someone and hang out with them? I mean I don't want to be the guy going "oh my god oh my god oh my god that is the best fursuit I've seen lets be bestest friends." So any advice?
Lastly I just got to clean up this profile with some thumbnails and deleting irrelevant journals and stuff in my inbox, hound me on this one

FA+

It takes time but it can work faster depending on the person, and how often you mingle. I've met people faster online only because there's a more instant mode of communication. There are some I only interact with better while at the conventions or out in the real world.
After three years of going to conventions, I'm finally starting to gain some wonderful friendships, which took three years to get to this point because we don't always see each other beyond the conventions. It didn't just happen over night.
The bottom line is don't force it. Be natural, be yourself. Hope that helps.
