Case of the Missing Hard Drive

He who hesitates is lost... So whenever I boot up my PC for the first time each day, I notice slower boot-up time and a BSOD shortly afterwards. I reboot, then lo and behold, it fails to detect the HD. It knows there's a device hooked up, but couldn't seem to detect the device itself. I thought it was dying, so I purchased a new one.
At first, it was alright, until the errors popped again. Now the only work-around I know of is to wait for the HD to 'warm' up. It's probably more literal than I realize.
Any advice?

If matters happen with different HDDs, then those could be the issue.
I would start with the cables. Check to see if they are loose or damaged. What brand is the hard drive?
P.S. Most OS these days require a certain amount of free disk space for use as cache or temporary memory for the applications it uses. so be sure to leave some free space for the OS.
Question: Type of HD: SATA or IDE
