Pretty much, i reckon thats what happens when an alien has no queen nearby to lay eggs, and i honestly think its canon, think about it, ridley took the scene out of the original cut, but put it back into the remastered version, with new lines too, so clearly he thinks its canon

As with both Alien and Aliens, I prefer the original release versions to any extended cuts -- all really good footage though, for sure.

yeah...but you have to admit, it adds interesting canon to the alien, look at my comment above
