Okay. I am not interested in this because you can argue over all the style choices and nobody is inherently wrong if you can make the argument in your universe.

Well, right. Style guides aren't generally dogmatic, they're mostly points of reference. I use Chicago at work and in my personal writing, but even the CMoS editors are very clear that it's permissible to treat it as a guideline. That being said, I do think there's an interesting discussion to be had around furry writing style, at least inasmuch as it's something that comes up in the panels I give sometimes. And that discussion seems cool enough to me.

I'd be interested. Style Guides are worthwhile, even if you end up disagreeing with them, because at least then it will be an informed deviation from the style!

Might as well. Some will treat it as gospel, others as pretentious nonsense. Crapshoot.

The first episode of the recent upstart  fangsandfonts podcast discussed at length some of the furry terminology such as you describe. I believe this has also come up in past episodes of  unsheathed. You might want to check in with the producers of those podcasts to get their input. It seems to me that any so called Style Guide to Furry Writing should be able to truthfully represent itself as a consensus of the more accomplished writers in the fandom, not just one person's opinion.

I agree with  stormkitty, it would have to be a consensus of the more successful and accomplished writers of the fandom if it was to be of any true use to furry writers out there. Otherwise, it would be much like 'Drawing Fantastic Furries' by Christopher Hart, an outsider's view of an artform that there are plenty of better representations out there for.

I think this would be a really difficult thing to "market," as it were. The newspapers I've written for and edited have used the Canadian Press style book for a base; in a formalized writing situation like newspapers it makes sense to have something like that, but every editor I knew had their own styles they work from. I know I certainly do for the magazines I edit now.

Fiction is a different beast, though. Every writer has their own vision and concept for how their furry fiction should read and what stylistic devices they use. It would be impossible to come up with a consensus for fictional universes. What you'd most likely have is a guide that essentially says "this is how a few writers do this, you should do it like that too." I'd think that authors who want to know how other authors handle certain stylistic situations in furry writing would just refer to other authors' works directly.
