Who's a pokémon trainer? :D

I've been playing nothing but Pokémon Y since I got it (which, it seems to me like everyone got Y and was saying everyone was gonna get X, but of all the people I've talked to about the newest game, only one of them was getting X and the rest were all getting Y...whatevs)
I am having a little problem though with the friends list (and I've been bugging people by posting all over forums and stuff because I can't figure out what could be wrong and I seem to be the only one having this problem...) Err, how do you add somebody to your friends list on Pokemon X/Y? I have several 3DS friends who've been playing the game (sometimes even at the same time I was) but my friends list on there is still empty...:s (Yes...shamelessly cut & pasted from other forum posts.)

Pokemon is too complicated for me to get into... the way the stats and attacks work, not to mention the different types and endless amount of creatures. I don't like having to study a game to be good at it... the creatures are cute tho XD
I don't really put a whole lot of thought into my team, I just go for the cute ones and the ones I'm already familiar with and roll with it x3
