DAAANCE Videooos of the Week! Focus: TEXTURE in Dance
12 years ago
For this journal, I wanted to have a focus on texture in dance. It's one thing to do dance moves but it's another when you speak this language of movement. Stomping your foot on the ground is not the same as tapping your foot lightly giving it a weightless feeling.
The videos I have for you today are hiphop choreography and locking videos!
I feel these are absolute excellent examples of texture in dance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYc.....&index=129 Bam and Koharu do a choreo that is RICH with texture. Look at their soft hits and hard hits to certain beats, listen to the musicality. When someone makes things effortless looking, there is also control and texture. The next time you hear those words, think about how they're doing the moves as opposed to whether or not the moves look cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9T.....FABD2D5C2B070F Once again, rich in texture. Parris Goebel's choreo and the crew. They're so chill and in control of their movements, it's unbelievable... One day, I'd hope to achieve their level, and you should too! But look at their controlled fast movements and soft, slow, careful movements.
This final video I have for you I feel wraps it up in a nice package. P-lock talks about the difference of just doing a move versus having control and musicality with texture. There really is a difference. The details. I advise you all to check this video out even if you aren't feeling it in the first two!

That's it for this week! Always thrilled to see people comment on these journals and even more happy to see what y'all take out of it! Thank you very much for giving this journal the time of your day! :3

After seeing Parris Goebel's vid, I really need to learn how to slow down and have better control. Probably need to cut down on the crazy dubstep and find some smoother songs.
Great vids as always, and I'll definitely be searching for the texture in my movement!
Thanks for the awesome updates! :D
Then again, most of the dancers I know are from watching So You Think You Can Dance.
There is much research and learning to be done! :D
I've picked up alot of noticing HOW people are doing things as opposed to just what looks cool. Because for every move that exerts your full amount of energy, you need to still have a full repertoire of moves that can balance energy with how much it grabs the audience - because nobody is superman. It's been far more fun working like this, finding out how rather than asking "what was that?".
Is just playing around with it, along with proper self-discipline, the best way to improve at stuff like this?
As for freestyle I feel like this is quickest learned. You can add texture by taking one move and moving that foot in different ways. A good excersize I do is take two or three moves, the basic groove. Go back to the basic foundational club groove and seriously just time yourself a set amount of time, not allowing yourself to do the same move in the same manner twice!
Don't be afraid to look like a fool to try things out. It's called Freestyle for a reason. :3 You find out what works and what doesn't work. Dancing is all about looking like a fool, so go with the flow!

Everyone says you should have fun and absolutely: you should. You should WANT to set aside time to practice frequently because it's fun to do and there's nothing quite like the rewarding feeling of seeing yourself get better and better over time.
I'm kind of sad locking isn't that popular in the U.S. anymore because it's one of my favourite styles and its history and story is just instantly relatable to people who are shy and don't think they can dance. I guess I'll make it my mission to bring Locking to the furry dance world--one step at a time =p
