Text Based Adventure Game Advice

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."
-William Shakespeare
Well, another project bug bit me, and actually it's an idea that's been floating around in my head for a while that I've been brushing off since it involves something I'm not terribly fond of: programming. However, I'm starting to feel that I need to branch out of my comfort zone more, and combining something I dislike with something I like may be the way to do it.
To get to the point, I'm interested in trying to make a text based adventure game (like Corruption of Champions minus the gratuitous porn, if you're familiar with that project), a D&D or Elder Scrolls-esque fantasy game that includes vore. Does anyone out there know of a good place to start with such a project? From a software point, not design one, for the time being? I've got a book on getting started with C++ (I think), but was curious if anyone else knew any good programs/engines/systems with which to build a text based game from.
