Mind-blowing films of the last couple years
12 years ago
Hello friends! Just wanted to discuss cinema for a moment. There's been a surprising amount of highly unique and inspiring film coming out lately, so figured I'd touch on a few of those real quick.
Last night i had the pleasure of seeing Jodorowsky's Dune, & I'm still riding the creative high. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxaXzxpKk4w
See it soon as you get a chance. I simply cannot stress how awesome & inspiring this documentary is, both visually and emotionally. Guys, trust... get some Alejandro up in your life (:
Oh & while on the subject of great films cut down before their prime, there's this other doc as well about Richard Williams' attempted making of The Thief and the Cobbler & it's subsequent kidnap/butchering by producer Fred Calvert. Not sure when this one's coming out, but I'm hoping soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv33FDnRkn0
Also, here are a few others that I've seen recently & LOVED. Listed in no particular order, they're all incredible films.
Vanishing Waves -

Upstream Color -

Holy Motors -

I had a lot of fun seeing Gravity as well, and to a slightly lesser degree The Conjuring & Spring Breakers. All on the more popular side tho & have been out for a while, so i won't bombard you with trailers you've most likely already seen.
Aaanyway. Last but certainly not least, here's some that aren't out yet but i sure am excited for :3
Johnathan Glazer's new film, Under the Skin -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOLLKM7-lL0
Apparently it's about a sort of "Man Who Fell to Earth" alien (Scarlett Johansson) who preys on hitchhikers as she travels across the UK.
Not sure what to expect from this one, but it sure looks cool. Marçal Forés' Animals -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysX20MEkpF0
And of course Masaaki Yuasa's new animation, Kick-Heart -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW-o2mvSDW4
So yeah, that's it for now. If you've seen any of these movies, or haven't yet but are appropriately jazzed, please do let me know what ya think!

Do you have any good viewing venue recommendations in and around L.A.? I've lived here for over a year now and I STILL barely know the place.

& then summer through early fall, the Hollywood Forever cemetery does outdoor screenings & events.
the season just ended, but be sure to check in on their calendar come spring.

Aside from those i'd say Leammle, Nuart & Arclight are your best bets.
So yeah, hope that's helpful. & over a year you say? That's awesome! As for getting to know things, don't be discouraged. I've lived in LA my whole life & still love it dearly. Apparently it just takes a couple years of settling in & familiarizing oneself w/ the various cultural knooks & crannies within the city sprawl (:
Admittedly the sprawl is a little difficult to adjust to. I have lived in large areas before, but this city is STILL so incredibly spread out...
And no worries dude! I have a new mailing address tho, so note me up and I'll send it your way. :)
Oh & word! I shall note you promptly ^ ^
Definitely putting Vanishing Waves on my must see list.
Some recent films I think you might enjoy are:
A Teacher
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AsnzodcFvQ
Antiviral (I believe this is on Netflix)

Oh btw, i was just told that you live in/around LA.
WE SHOULD KICK IT YO
what other carax/lavant movies have you seen?
i need to track down jodorowsky's dune && i've been wanting to see a touch of sin for a while
and there was a fuckin small screening in my state at the end of october but i missed it aaaaAAAAAA
might make up for it w/ a showing of andrei rublev in december euheuh
oh & wooord, i'm greatly looking forward to touch of sin as well!
seeing it in that environment & w/ that followup would've probably given it much more impact
(though i don't mean to imply i dislike it)
you may wanna look into post tenebras lux if you haven't already,
lots of good ideas & images floatin in there
