As E308 laid promise, the holidays this years would see the release of several highly anticipated game titles: Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Dead Space Left 4 Dead, Fable II. All the stated titles would greet fans with well deserved promise. Oh how we have been needing that. Though it has seriously dented my spending in the past month of so, I've come to purchase every single title thus far! What can I say? I'm a gamer =P and I'm gonna let you know just what i feel about each title.
[Fallout 3] I thought Oblivion was beautiful and a huge open world. Well Bethesda studios has wowed me again with a title that only exceeds any of the studios prior art of game mastery. the Wasteland of Fallout 3 is a nearly endless land scape with nearly endless missions and enemy types. Oh, and don't try to get every mission completed in one run through ...becuase you can't. I don't care what your friend says, you can't. One of the best features of the game play, aside from the V.A.T.S. system, is that every action leads to a different set of reactions. If you choose one mission over the other? Well you'll complete the one at work, but lose the chance to do others; do I hear another play through? you bet. Fallout 3 gets 5 flesh hungry ghouls out of 5.
[Left 4 Dead] With a studio like Valve it's hard even picture a bad game, well Left 4 Dead is no exception. The Zombie Apocalypse is here, and you and your friends have no chose but to pick up a auto shot gun and go for the "Brain Salad" achievement. Though the game has been noted to look a little out of date in terms of graphics, the game play is what matters here. The game play looks and feels like something right out of a Hollywood zombie film, and it honestly scares the shit out of me. You, as the player, can choose to portray one of the four main survivors, and play through 4 missions that each start off like mini horror film scenarios; though the game lack explanation for the apocalypse and how our friends have come to meet and survive, we've all seen and heard this stuff before am I right? The only real issue with the game is that it's way to short; even with all it has to offer and throw at you; however, there does seem to be a lot of reply value which aids to the games shortness. Left 4 Dead gets 4 exploding Boomers out of 5.
[Gears of War 2] The Logust Horde is back, and sicking entire cities in this new squeal. After detonating the Lightmass bomb, the Logusts were all but extinguished, and now they are back to finally over throw humanity. Gears of War 2 is everything and more of what was promised in interviews and leaked game play footage. One playing it will defiantly feel the game to be taking place in the center of a war this time, apposed to the last titles more so '"personal" feel. Gears 2 offers us the next chapter in the saga we fight for, and a does so in 5 breathless and action filled acts; though prepare for as Boss that will make you shed a tear and say, "uh hu?". Seriously, RAAM greatness to this? Aside from the story, Gears 2 has a lot to more to offer such as Horde. Horde allows you, by yourself, and with friends to battle up to 50 waves of pissed Logust. Each 10 waves gives bonus attributes to your enemies; raising their accuracy and difficulty. So you may start off on casual and by wave 40 be battling against enemies that would have been played on a insane run through... thank god you started on casual right? n00b. Perhaps the greatest contribution offered in Gears 2 is the online party system that the previous Gears lacking. The party system is much like Halo's Matchmaking and thank god it's something we know. Now online play with your friends is that much better. Gears of War 2 gets 5 reving chainsaws out of 5.
[Dead Space] It was surprising to hear EA announcing they were going to make a survival horror, but their success is noted in their latest title: Dead Space. The player takes the role of Isaac Clarke, an engineer who must fight his way through a stricken mining ship infested with Necromorphs, a hostile, virus-like, free-roaming alien DNA with the ability to reanimate the bodies of the dead, turning them into grotesque monstrosities. does that not entice you to pick the controller up already? Dead space is one of those rares games that comes along every now and then and blows us away. I'm willing to call it the best survival horror game since Resident Evil 4. The games looks and feel reminds you of something right out of the "Alien" universe with huge derelict freighters and pulse rifles; though, the game is also very original with it's choice of weapons. Most every weapon available to find, or purchase in Dead Space is a mining tool, and how original next to your location on a mining vessel. Aside from the weapons, EA also offers us a new type of 360 game play in "Vacuums". This zero gravity offers new experience to solving puzzles and combating nasty enemies. The only real issues that bring the game down are the lack of replay value and it's predictable story line. Dead Space mines a 3 out of 5.
NOTE: If you play Dead space on "Hard" difficulty conserve your ammo as in always have a set of ammo you don't use; a reserve. I played Hard mode and got 10 hours! 10 hours into the game to the final boss and have no credits or ammo. I was very upset that I had to start over, but such is how a survival horror game goes. You survive with what you have or lose. =D >.>
(Sadly I cannot offer a review of Fable II becuase I've not yet gotten my hands on playing my copy. Between all the new titles coming out so fast, work, and school it's been a challenge, but I've heard good things and hope to get to it soon.)
With other great titles like Prince of Persia and Resident Evil 5 on the near horizon, I can easily say this has been the best year for gamers in a long time. Kilimanjaro!
