The Smiling Hero
Today I met an amazing person. She is 75 years old
and can't move without a walking frame... She was
operated on last year, but the operation was not very
successful. Now it's impossible to do anything else -
it will kill her. When I took her bag I was shocked -
she had almost nothing to eat, but she was smiling.
I accompanied her home and we had a wonderful talk
- the best 30 minutes of my life. She survived the war,
she was starving when she was a little girl, she went
through Hell... but she survived. And she can smile, she
is alone, she doesn't see her brother very often... but
she can SMILE. She will never be able to walk without
a walking frame, she is suffering severe pain, she says
that she will die in a year, but she is happy. Everything she
bought, I'm sure, was for her brother who will come soon,
and she doesn't care about herself, she just wants to treat her
lovely brother. At last she even wanted to pay me, though
she had almost nothing to eat. I'm so sad that at that
moment I could give her only 100 rubles, shame on me.
She deserves more than that; why did I spent money
several hours before, I'm not even starving?! But I received
the best gift a person can wish for... she told me her name - Galya,
Aunt Galya. You are my hero, Aunt Galya,
I will never forget you, I will pray for you.
I wish I could do so much more for you,
but it's the only thing I can do.
Thank you.
I'm thinking about it. There are so many elderly people
who don't have money, who are alone, who can't enjoy their lives.
There were young and healthy people, but nobody tried to help that
wonderful woman. Damn, is it so difficult to spend 30 minutes of your life
to help people who made this world a better place to live?! Why do
we care only about ourselves? Why can't we help the elderly to enjoy Life?
Why can't we be thankful? Why?! I'm a young mongrel that thinks
that he is unhappy, depressed and lonely. It took me less than 5 minutes
to walk that path, she spends all day to do that! I can walk without
help, she has to do that alone! I'm not a disabled person and helpless...
and she is! Shame on me! How dare I to have these thoughts?

"All praise and glory are yours,
Lord our God.
For you have called us to serve you and one another in
love.
Bless our sick today so that they may bear their illness
in union with Jesus' sufferings and restore them quickly
to health.
Bless those who have grown old in your service
and give them courage and strength in their faith.
Lead us all to eternal glory.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Your Son, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen."
Help the elderly, they made this world a better place for you.
Protect the elderly, they protected you.
Pray for the elderly, they are happy that you can live in this world.
Bring a smile to the elderly, they are happy that you can smile.
Without the elderly you wouldn't be happy.
Life is short... and one day you'll be old.

The elderly are our best resource for wisdom and a weather vane for
how society is to be measured.
I'm so glad you got to spend time with this lovely person.
Yes, I was lucky to meet her. It's quite funny - if I
hadn't been smoking that time I would have never met her.
