Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. It is often claimed that during the American War of Independence, the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam), reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past.[22] The name Santa Claus supposedly derived from older Dutch Sinter Klaas. However, the Saint Nicholas Society was not founded until 1835, almost half a century after the end of the war.[23] In a study of the "children's books, periodicals and journals" of New Amsterdam, the scholar Charles Jones did not find references to Saint Nicholas or Sinterklaas.[24] Not all scholars agree with Jones's findings, which he reiterated in a book in 1978.[25] Howard G. Hageman, of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, maintains that the tradition of celebrating Sinterklaas in New York existed in the early settlement of the Hudson Valley. He agrees that "there can be no question that by the time the revival of St. Nicholas came with Washington Irving, the traditional New Netherlands observance had completely disappeared."[26] However, Irving's stories prominently featured legends of the early Dutch settlers, so while the traditional practice may have died out, Irving's St. Nicholas may have been a revival of that dormant Dutch strand of folklore. In his 1812 revisions to A History of New York, Irving inserted a dream sequence featuring St. Nicholas soaring over treetops in a flying wagon – a creation others would later dress up as Santa Claus.

But was Irving the first to revive the Dutch folklore of Sinterklaas? In New York, two years earlier John Pintard published a pamphlet with illustrations of Alexander Anderson in which he calls for making Saint Nicholas the patron Saint of New York and starting a Sinterklaas tradition. He was apparently assisted by the Dutch because in his pamphlet he included an old Dutch Sinterklaas poem with an English translation. In the Dutch poem, Saint Nicholas is referred to as 'Sancta Claus'.[19] Ultimately, his initiative helped Sinterklaas to pop up as Santa Claus in the Christmas celebration, which returned – freed of episcopal dignity and ties – via England and later Germany to Europe again.

The Saint Nicholas Society of New York celebrates a feast on 6 December to this day. The town of Rhinebeck in Dutchess County, New York, which was founded by Dutch and German immigrants, has an annual Sinterklaas celebration. It includes Sinterklaas' crossing the Hudson River and then a parade to the center of town.

I did some after work. Sadly work at Walmart, so it was horrible at the black Friday sales at six p.m.

Thanks and you as well with what you celebrate and I'll be working (technically I am right now lol) but I pretty much spent it playing Pokémon Y with a cousin and saying hi to my mom's side of the family and also by eating only a small portion (at most 3lbs total) because I didn't want to be around my alpha purist uncle {ignorant religious person my terms for it} any longer than I have to but luckily I have to work so it's a win to me considering I don't think he knows about my homosexual relationships (I don't know if that's too much information but that's my typical thanksgiving)

nothings too much information here XD unless its going into really heavy detail with sexual encounters! Hah, well after reading that and hearing about this uncle. It is a very good thing you are working, the pokemon game sounds like it was pretty fun! As for eating only a little, I really don't blame you, eating too much just gives you a horrible stuffed feeling! Whoop for being able to get out of a uncomfortable situation and sorry that there is someone like that you have to deal with in your life dear!

It's alright he's only tolerable in small doses because he doesn't like my Protestant aunt and when she comes around he basically acts like a bouncer and shows her out I luckily never saw this and sorry I basically gave out a lecture on why I use my terms for ignorance in the religious communities n.n' but the gaming and I eat less because I'm trying to shed some unwanted weight so I can join up in the air force before I turn 28 while recovering from medical issues that are not problematic at the moment just annoying that I still have to wait for it to completely go away so I can enlist or back to school after 9 years (decided to take a break from school lol)

ughhhh! too late! I am already too full! D: I think I already gained weight! DX *sadly flails*
Today I technically had a "Black Thanksgiving", family came over and we all had a great potluck dinner! I made a Rum Cheesecake! it was a big hit for the party! :3
Then afterwards, there was some early black friday specials on the same night as thanksgiving (8pm-ish)! So we went black friday shopping at a local target, only to have a pair of $7 earbuds (regular price $9-$10). The best deal though, when we went to a local walmart, we got a $70 anti-virus program for like $10!!!
So, we went home afterwards with like a bunch of stuff for xmas. While we settled in at home, we ate some leftovers....but we had NO GRAVY!! D:
the only bad part was having so much dirty dishes to clean! D: It will probably take like two different loads for the dishwasher! DX Thankfully I already got one load cleaned, but I still have one more load to go! (ehh, i'll do the second load tomorrow >.<*)

Black friday sounds really fun, we don't get it over here much, I mean we get new years sales but I think that's about it. LMAO holy hell ear buds are expensive over there :o I can get some for like, £1.00. But whoot on savings just be careful on deals, people will try to con you. Shops are smart as hell like that!

Eeeek the dishes! Ohh no the dishes! Worst part of any celebration meal is cleaning and dishes!

sorry, i had a hard time trying to explain what a potluck is XD

for example, my aunt brought over some ham. My mom cooked the turkey, a few uncles brought over some pies. My grandmother brought the stuffing. my other aunt brought over some macaroni and cheese with bacon bits :P
with the food everyone brought over, BAM! instant family buffet!

Sooo...one BIG meal on a BIG plate will definitely make you gain weight!!! XD *giggles and makes a derpy face*

On the bright side, I survived! I finally got all the dirty dishes clean!
