Thanksgiving: the untainted holiday?
I was talking with a friend of mine about Turkey Day, when I realized that, all things considered, Thanksgiving is probably one of the least tainted by commercialism holidays we have. I mean sure, there's the whole buying a big dinner thing, but it doesn't feel as frivolous as, say, presents and decorations of Christmas or the candy and costumes of Halloween sometimes can feel. At its core, Thanksgiving still seems to be mostly about being together with your friends and family and doing just what it says on the tin (TV Tropes FTW!), giving thanks.
Now I sort of understand why some people got really annoyed with Black Friday starting on Midnight, Black Friday, despite immediately following Thanksgiving, is really more of a Christmas holidays. It's the green and red racing flag signifying that the day of thanks is officially past and the season of buying and Santa is upon us, and I can see how forcing the start-time of that by a few hours could make a few people upset that its encroaching on their moreso untainted holiday.
Ah well, I'm just rambling cause I thought the idea was an interesting one, and I may be wrong, anyway ... HAPPY COONSGIVING! 8D

I'm not American so I don't know what Thanksgiving is like, as an experience. As far as my perception of it goes, you're right, it does seem less 'tainted' by commercialism than other holidays. I don't have a problem with Black Friday itself, it's more with the hypocrisy of people being thankful for all the things they have one day (and at least on TV they make it seem VERY soppy) and then the next day you hear about all the people who were trampled to death or in critical condition due to sales rage. A day where prices are lowered, not a problem. People's reaction to that...really quite sad.
Some part of me wishes to celebrate thanksgiving someday, to see what its like :3
I do very much agree that Thanksgiving is almost imposable to ruin business wise. I can only think that stores not selling normal food items and instead replace it with all "Thanksgiving" packs that cost 1-5 dollars more for each item or something. It's just about untouchable from business ruin.
And if no one wants to acknowledge the bloody genocide, the smallpox blankets that they were given in return.....
So then you want to recognize a day that suggest you hang out with family and eat a lot of food.
Isn't that a given? To like.... want to be with family and have nice meals?
Go figure though, this is 'Murica, if it involves stuffing your face, lets make a holiday out of it. Afterall Its not like christmas or halloween started in america like the hypocritical bullshit one like thanksgiving.
"lets celebrate a holiday that remembers a very nice feast, and of help given by the Natives..... but not remember the colonists turned around and literally raped murded and well yeah.... stole Everything from them
Thanks for giving, that was so delicious, i think we'll Take the rest.
Isn't that big of a deal, unless your Native of course.
American holiday about gluttony based off horrible betrayal. Grand. Oh wait... you say its about being with family? Oh well that just saves the whole fucking thing doesn't it, cause families cant just.... get together without it being a holiday. And unless your travelling On that day, i dont want to hear bullshit that its the only day people have off, if you can get there within one day, then you shouldn't wait for a fucking holiday. And if you can't get there in one day, then you obviously managed to get other days off and dont need to rely on holidays to have time off to spend with family.
Should just axe the holidays name and call it "family day" so people stop being so blindly ignorant about the FUCKED up history behind it.
