I have acess to a fair number of surplus science fiction books. mostly hardbacks. How far are you from Boston?

Hardbacks fill the boxes up. The Flat Rate Boxes that I'm looking to use are about shoe-box sized.

I'm in the Southeast, so, not close.

So not a good fit then. Ahh well. Good luck finding stuff.

You sign up as a volunteer. This gives you access to their forum. Just look over, find one you want to mail to, and then you mail it.

I wholeheartedly approve of this! When my brother was stationed overseas, he said the best thing I ever sent him was a sci-fi book. Of course, he'd already read it dozens of times, but it gave him something to -do-, and a link to the reason why he was out there.

Sadly, all of my sci-fi books are treasured companions, but I do have an idea for you: Talk to your local public library. Often times, they have lots of paperbacks surplussed, and if you explain what they are for, they might be willing to help out. Heck, it could even be a local news splash, if you do it right.

"Local author works with public library to send books to soldiers". Makes good copy, particularly when the only thing left in the news is rehashing tired old political arguments that are not going to be resolved any time in the next year.
