Grad School Apps and Other Things Currently Kicking My Ass
17 years ago
Grad School -- I am far more than knee-deep in the confusing as hell burning shit hole that is filling out Grad School applications. I swear, would it kill them to have a complete list of all requirements and necessary information in ONE place? And is it too much to ask that they have all relevant dates clearly listed? I mean, hell, one of my colleges has a due date of February 15th for the application, but then 4 days ago I was informed that if I want funding of any sort, the date the application is due is the 15th of December. WTF?! I understand that the application process is the first test of preparedness and all that, but a bit fewer trap doors would be nice.
Work -- My theatre is getting ready for the Nutcracker ballet. We began preparations and stage set-up on Sunday by loading and unloading heavy metal-and-plyboard stage props, hauling said props into the theatre, hanging said props on the pipes, forgetting to properly weight the pipes thereby making them almost 1000lbs out of weight, getting the entire crew to haul said 1000lbs 60ft in the air, hoping to hell nothing slips while we get it properly weighted, and then repeating the process again without the forgetting. I wound up falling backwards off the truck at one point and my hands got chewed up by the constant hauling of metal, wood, and rope. Plus there was a lot of supporting these large, top-heavy props while they are being attached to the pipes. All around, it led to much soreness for which I am still taking aspirin.
Overdue Commission -- I still have my 2000th view commission to do. Sadly it has taken a backseat to my academic pursuits.
Finding 2 mid-year roommates -- 'nuff said, aye?

I think college is intended to make you appreciate even utterly insane employers, as they seem pleasant in comparison.
I'm applying to the Science Studies program at UCSD and CSU Fort Collins which is a land-grant school... hopefully the science and the ag of those two will mediate the excessive academia. No telling on Annenberg though. Private and East Coast... never can tell.
Don't count on science helping, my Ph.D. was in microbiology. It was the same mess for everyone. At least I didn't have to print out my entire thesis on rag paper for them, just a few pages. Rutgers switched over to electronic submission because they were running out of room to store everything.
So yeah, good luck to you! lol.
Oy, and stage crew work? Ugh, I did that twice -- ever. Definitely not for me... insane hour changes at random, last-minute job notice, people impatient that you can't lift something 40x heavier than you. I'll just stick to retail >.> haha
The stage work is ok for the most part. I actually like the ability to set my own schedule despite the chaotic and unpredictable nature of it. The biggest problem I have with it is -- and I don't know if it's specific to my work or a stage crew thing in general -- is that no one seems capable of thinking three-dimensionally. Personally, that seems to be an exceedingly important ability when dealing with stage stuff and directing others in dealing with the same stuff.
