Forming an Aspiring Artist Art Group / Clan
11 years ago
If you're like me and have been spending a lot of time trying to get better at drawing but have trouble staying focused on that and practicing because it's such a long journey from awful to something you'd want to show off, I'd like to propose an idea: A small, motivated "clan" of individuals looking to better their talents by working and learning together.
There are places to go for advice when drawing, but they're more impersonal, the feedback unpredictable. I'm sure that works for some, those brave enough to hack at it in public view. Others just start posting and don't stop until they're actually quite good. I can see a few newer artists in this category that I hope will break through, really hit their stride.
Today I saw something by Badgerben that was just unbelievable, easily his best work yet, which although not a significant departure from his more recent work, is clear evidence that if you work your ass off for ten years you too can be a top-caliber artist.
Would anyone want to join up and work together to get over the hump, to try and "make it" as an artist? I'm trying my best, but I'd love to have company and share in the journey.
What I'd like to do is either come up with a curriculum, adapt one from a book, or find a furry artist who's willing to set up one, even if it's paid consulting, an odd but hopefully interesting sort of commission. Then, as things progress, it'd be rewarding to get feedback from artists about how things are going, about where to focus instead of fumbling around. If there were eight to a dozen in the group, it would only take an hour or two of stream time to get some very specific, personalized feedback, and the cost of that is pretty nominal. I'd be willing to cover it or we could take turns, whatever works best.
For example: Two hours of group stream time with a pro-grade artist once every two weeks over the course of a year for feedback, suggestions, and specific advice. That's about $1500 to $3000 in stream time stretchet out over the course of the year, but honestly, it'd be worth every cent. It'd just be mostly wasted on one person, in the first twenty minutes you'd get everything you needed, it'd be much better to do this as a group. I'll cover all of this, no hesitation there, but I want to share it.
So if you're an aspiring artist, no matter how awful, who wants to learn from the ground up and are really motivated to get there, let me know. Nothing's locked down yet, this is just to gauge interest, so if you've got ideas or suggestions that's even better.

Working on my own I just don't seem to have the motivation to draw every day, this group sounds like a wonderful thing.
If you're interested, that's great. I don't want to be ruthlessly discriminating, but I do want to make sure it's a small group of enthusiastic individuals. It's not raw talent that matters but spirit, so if you can commit to something like an hour a day, give or take, to keep at it, that'd be the idea.
As much as I dislike it, I need to be 'nagged' occasionally to stay focused, this solitude tends to make it too easy for me to drift into a timeless passing of the days..
