I'm Making a Video Game
So uh.... I'm starting.
Work on my video game. Oh yeah! Hi, I'm Aerith. I make video games. Actually... fun fact, that was my main skill before coming to FA. But I figured until I improved on drawing and concepts, making a good game would have been difficult.
o..o So yes! I have made video games before. 2D platformers are my specialty, but I'm working on making it less about the... "platforming" and more about the exploration and the journey (For example I'm considering dropping the jump button). Just because a game runs 2-dimensionally doesn't mean that the gameplay ought to be set in stone.
My goal is for it to heavily emphasize exploration, kind of like when you go out into Hyrule Field for the first time, or get off the boat in Morrowind. That being said, a big area is not what I mean. I just want to have plenty of places to go and plenty of things to do in them. There's nothing worse than infinite space with nothing in it, haha. The game will be a solo experience, and I kinda want the player to feel lonely, possibly even scared. The main character will not be a valiant knight, or even human for that matter. It's a big world out there, full of mystery and danger. :)
Just thought I'd give you all an update. I'll possibly reveal the concept for the protagonist in the near future. ^..^

I suggest trying them out if you want to see a good example of a game based on exploration. Perhaps you could even draw inspiration from it?
Not having a jump button sounds interesting. Perhaps holding the up arrow while walking will automatically make your character try to jump to higher places? That way the intent to get somewhere is in the controls but it removes any timing or discipline required to get to places, making the game more focused on seeing places than memorizing game mechanics and controls or some such.
On another note, I was sort of kinda working on a vore game you may have heard of (RX8 or its predecessor Barbftr)... well, not explicitly working on it... more like making an animation for it XD But still, a neat little thing.
I've had an idea for a game based on a little educational flash game I played years back about Allosaurus. It was kinda like a grid map and you moved around the tiles on the map to explore them, and many places had special features in them like tar pits or large herbivore packs. Out of all the game ideas I've had I think a game like that is more within my 'reach' than just about anything else, I'd just have to learn how to do it =p
*gets a funnel*
I'm thinking of having a more... flowing style to my games. I've worked with tile-style placeables but it's not my thing at all. I'm thinking of pretty much hand-drawing everything. :>
The tile-based thing was just an idea for my own game. For your game, without any real knowledge of what you have in mind, all I can imagine is something like Prince of Persia or Flashback or Knytt. Hand-drawn stuff looks nice but would take quite a long time =p
Yeah, I'm not really sure. I'm thinking of possibly using hand-drawn backgrounds with invisible objects... We'll see how things go!
I'll be waiting impatiently =p
