Hmm my commissions have a....I guess 7/10 Chance of being good, and a 3/10 of being Failures or rip-offs.

Still, the thought of a Bad commission makes me paranoid

Had it plenty of times, which is why there are several artists I, personally wouldn't consider commissioning. If there are ones that are a bit of a 'gamble', I make sure the spend on them isn't too excessive, so if I lose it, it's not too much of a pain. Then, where possible, I try to minimise the time between paying them and seeing an output. Not keen on paying for a piece, when, say, there are 20 odd people in front of me in a queue!

a good way would be to perhaps contact people who've comission the artis / artists you're interested in and ask how they where ? :)

or you could always ask for some sketch mock ups first before payment ? I personally don't like to pay anyone unless I've seen a sketch first so I know they're not just going to take my money and run

Only issue with that suggestion is that many artists don't work or even sketch until they are paid first.

I've met plenty who do c: - I'm sure if you ask the specific artist if they'd be okay with you seeing a sketch first before payment - they'd be okay with that ^_^ I can;t see any reason why they wouldnt be.

When I do commissions I never accept payment until the commissioner is 100% happy with my sketch and I make sure my sketch is cleaned up too. That way they know they're getting what they want and don't feel ripped off because they can make as many changes as they feel necessary until it looks like how they want. If they fear I'll drop off the face of the planet after paying at least they have a sketch they're 100% happy with and can take to someone else to finish (but I won't just disappear XD )

It's how I want to be treated as a commissioner so it's how I treat my clients. And I usually close my commissions if I have a queue that's 5 images or 2 really complicated images so no one has to wait to hear back from me after being approved. And I send the full rez file in a note or e-mail before I post it in my gallery in case the client doesn't want the image shared for what ever reason.

I absolutely know the feeling. And it drives me insane.

I have two commissions from different people that are pretty popular. The artists just ignore any notes or messages after being a month+ past promised date. I'm not a stickler and just gave up, resigned that the ~70 dollars has been wasted. Both of these have been months ago.

Maybe the next person I commission will actually finish it.

Maybe It's wrong of me, but I do sometimes feel like I put 40+$ into an artist who's pushing out art daily. Like I feel confident that it'll be a quick return and then like clockwork, everytime, there will be some kind of computer crash or RL issue or holdup that ends up taking months to get the commission back. I understand that it can't be helped, but it just feels pretty awful sometimes. You take 100$ to the store and you can get yourself something nice right then and there. Money's tight, it just bites having to always wait forever, is all.

Anyways. I love the artists I've commissioned and all, and I hope that they all are alright and stay happy, I just felt like I'd join in on this little rant.
