Well It really does depend on the medium , the type of commishion and the scale of it / detail.
But But I assume its just digital art or hand drawn / colored art . I think 1 year is perfectly fine with allowances upto 1.5 years to offer a good coverage incase of crap happening . but still if there has been no communication .. That is Sketchy .
I commissioned someone at Furfright back in 2012 and found out that artist is on some bad artist list that is on Livejournal and eventually got banned off of here for not supplying art after getting the money from people. So, I am basically out $50.00.
I agree. Communication is one of the key factors. Waiting is one thing not saying anything is another. If the artist doesn't say anything then it falls on you to get the ball rolling as they say. 2 years that is way too long. Also, let me guess you paid first, right?
I think I'm up to nearly 3 years and have recently just had the WIPs provided... Even with the artist pumping out a tonne of other art work recently commissioned...

In general I now only give 40days max so that I can file for PayPal protection and get refund if needed.
