Laptop is officially dead in the water. The team I had working on it to fix it, said there was a recurring hardware malfunction, and the HDD is failing. It's like having a pet die to lose this Dell Latitude D610... it was such a great computer for nearly 5 years. Would have been 5 years old this Christmas... v.=.v
But where one life ends, a new one begins. I'll be receiving a new ultramobile laptop for school, starting in a couple weeks, and here's the setup:
Dell Inspiron Mini 9
-8.9" LCD Screen
-Windows XP Home (will be upgrading to XP Pro SP2 / Knoppix Linux dual-boot)
-32GB SSD (w/ slot for SDHC expansion (32GB SDHC plz))
-1GB RAM (will be upgrading to 2GB)
-3 USB ports
-36W/hr battery (4+ hours) (hoping to find a larger battery too)
In any case, I'll be getting my poor dead comp back soon, and will see if I can get it back in working order with a new HDD. Better to have 2 laptops than 1 anyway.
Until then, I'll be on my iMac til Dec. 24th, and will be in Florida thereafter. If all goes well, I'll probably be borrowing my brother's laptop and running a Knoppix Linux live disc session to get online, possibly back on XP within a couple days thereafter.
EDIT: The people working on it were able to salvage 20GB out of the 24GB I had stored. Better some than none, I guess. :\

I hope you love your new computer as much as your old. I admit.. it took me awhile to get used to Vista XD.
If anything, the smaller screen and keyboard will be the only things to get used to, which don't bother me. I prefer a compact computer, to a great big, bulky HP or Compaq.
Perhaps "ultramobile" is the wrong word. It's more of a netbook-sized lappy.

I've needed something ultra-mobile, and this is the perfect computer for me until I can get a Macbook Pro.
As for your dead hard drive, I'd take it out of the computer and then get a linux live CD and run it. If the computer runs with no issue then all you need to do is replace the hard drive.
I had to use my laptop with a live CD for a whole semester b/c I some how killed the harddrive..... it made some not so kewl noises....
What are they reffering to as the "reccuring hardware malfunction" just the harddrive? It sounds like its the only issue.
I'm also going to try putting in a new HDD to see if it that will do anything. Hopefully all will be well.
Also, if you're getting an EEE, get the XP version. Linux Xandros sucks.
I've got 5 other OSs ready to use in case anything goes awry.
Netbooks are useful and small, and since you are using it for things that don't require a big screen, its perfect for what you want it for.
And yes, exactly my point. This new lappy is for my mobile lifestyle. I WOULD have dragged my old lappy around, but the battery was getting old, and I was afraid of a HDD crash (which, in the end, occured due to self-fuckup).
