I think a lot of the time the gimmick is the creativity of the situation the artist has come up with. or use of characters they usually prohibit from use.

From what I've seen on most of these auctions it's complete vanilla stuff.
You're character will be humped by my 'sona, or you three will have a threesome.
Nothing really oozing with creative juices.

Easy money for the artists who are rarely open and in high demand and for the commissioner to get something from them. It makes little to no sense why people would pay so much, but if that is what they want to spend their money on, then their choice in the end. Not worth bashing it, some people get real defensive about it too. X3

I like to see myself as a place to go for everyone who can't afford dozens of hundreds of dollars on art but still would like to see something juicy tailored to their liking. :3c

It's just a scam to vie for an artists attention. It makes zero sense to blow your money on these, since most artists who open YCH's tend to never close down normal commissions anyway.

It's more like a priority thing, and taking advantage of your customer base for some extra coin.

Also it makes you look lazy as shit, FINISH YOUR SKETCH ALL THE WAY, DON'T MAKE OTHERS PAY FOR IT.

For all the un clever people who cant think of a pose for themself, teases them into not having to think about what to get.

On the artists end, easier than opening for comms of oh god who knows what and can get people to fight over a pose they are comfortable drawing.

I feel ya on that :P Granted I've thought about trying it, I always felt it to be a little wishy-washy on who I want to be on FA.
Since I'm more of just a drawer than a large aspiring artist I don't think I'd feel good trying to get way more money than I feel like my own drawing is worth.

It is tempting when you see how much moolah these artist get from this.
But I also feel like I'm just drawing for fun mostly and would never be able to make a living out of it.
I also think whoever wants to pay me for my work should pay as much as they feel it is worth to them, it just feels wrong to me to milk people with a lot of money and leave everyone else to dry. ^^;

I definitely need to make a ref sheet so I can make steaming hot pics of myself doing mundane stuff.

I don't really mind YCH, imo it's a bit of a compromise between the artist and the commissioner. That way, the artist leads the commissions into a theme he feels like drawing, and the commissioner gets his character. That'd save time for both the commissioner and the artist. And that's where the problem is imo : if it saves time for the artist and leaves less liberty to the commissioner... Then it should cost a bit less than a normal commission. And well, that part really goes haywire xD

also yeah I think ych isn't too bad as a concept. artist comes up with the picture and a person pays to stick their character in it
just not a fan of the auction format, noway I'd ever pay thaaat much for art from anybody

my take on it is this...when taking commissions the artist is doing whatever the paying customer wants, what they want and how they want it, if you take a lot of commissions your working for your customers with very little freedom of artistic expression. Some artists have little time to just draw for them self, so a YCH is a good way to draw for them self but still make money doing it. but of course like most things out there people do abuse this.

I did one because it was a chance to commission an artist who's practically NEVER available :P

I like this piece a lot. I've wanted to have something drawn by this artist for a long time, and while I'd rather have had a normal commission from them, they are so rarely available for ANYTHING that I'm happy to have snagged even a YCH. My character looks smexy in their style, even if I cannot control the pose or coloring or what the character is doing.
