It's been three weeks since the defeat of Deepfist. The party were automatically forgiven for the specifics of how Deepfist died, in light of the fact that the general had been plaguing the town of Newpost for so long.
With the greatest threat eliminated, the town and the party turned to rebuilding. Duke used his strength to help deliver construction materials to the ravaged Bath-House, once again making the party its heroes. Michael and Sam worked with local paladins to rebuild the temple. Ark worked for Brooder, the head of the Thieves Guild, to recruit new members- and he did so well he was given an official position in the guild as a recruiter. Rather ironic since Ark helped to create the guild a thousand years before! Weiss and Gruffydd made use of their leatherworking skills on a project they had in mind for some time- magical leather harnesses, to assist the party (and of course make them look sexy as well). Apart from working on the project, Weiss also helped with the sick in town, discovering and helping to prevent an epidemic, and Gruffydd used his magic to help repair the outer wall of the city, where a flimsy illusion of a wall of glass had to be used previously.
Then one day when everyone relaxed at the inn, a young lad came running in from the town guard telling the party a suspicious stranger was outside asking for them! We hurried out to meet this person. On the way in, captain Kora mentioned that an elf had been captured- possibly the elf 2nd-in-command whom Gruff had seen when spying on Deepfist before!
At any rate, in we went, and the stranger was none other than Rybann! We hadn't seen him since he flew off into the magical storm with the Green Lady. He had completely renounced his old ways and was trying to rebuild his life as a druid, now calling himself Hyssop.
Hyssop had no intentions of sticking around- he came to deliver items and messages to the party. He returned the armor Ark had lent him, gave back the poison Gruffydd had given him, and then entrusted the group with a wrapped-up bundle and special instructions: the contents had to be fertilized with Michael's blood, and planted in the soil in an ancient age thousands of years before! We suddenly realized- these were the remains of the Green Lady! She had expired using her power to rout Deepfist's army, and now was reduced to a seed. But Michael, her "father," was away helping rebuild and none of us had heard from him in a while to know where to deliver the sad news.
Hyssop left us then, and rode out into the woods on his new wolf-mount. We asked him if he wanted to stay, but he now sought his life as a druid in the wild.
After that, Weiss went to help with the sick in town, and the rest of us went to interview the mysterious elf who was second-in-command to Deepfist... only when we got there, we saw there was a mistake! It was just Rickett, the spy Duke and Weiss had taken down previously!
Ark and Gruffydd hurried to warn Kora that the real second-in-command was still out there! But while we were gone, the sly elf played on Duke's insecurities and fears, insulting and egging him on until Duke was at the point of breaking the elf's neck in his own hands! Duke squeezed harder, enraged at the things the elf was saying..... but he heard the voices of his friends and lovers calling for him to relent- they know Duke is not a monster! He let the elf go, and sank to the floor.
As Ark and Gruffydd warned Kora and tried to figure out what to do next, a rider approached the city, calling for Gruffydd and all the party. Ark climbed a tower to get a better look, while Gruff went outside with Kora to meet the rider. The message was from Silbastian and their other friends in the city- "Danger! Return to Dreadful City!"
Everyone came together with the messenger, a half-elf-half-orc named Hemiola. She had been working with Silbastian, Tiburoun, and the others- but suddenly rifts in time began opening up again in the city- it's happening again!! Adding to that, terrible monsters have appeared and begun killing! Knowing we had not much time, the party decided to leave the next morning. Ark and Weiss went to resolve a challenge and crime committed by Weiss against the judge Holbogarten, Duke and Gruffydd went to recover strength at the bath-house and prepare Gruffydd's spells for the following day, and still there was no sign of Michael and Sam to be told the news!
Gruffydd noticed Duke's distress after his confrontation with the elf. Duke was afraid of his dark thoughts, his desire to kill the wretch, and feared he might really be evil- but his little team-mate calmed his fears. We all have evil within us, but the choice not to act on it makes us good- so the Legacy of Deepfist died when Duke let the elf live.
Ark and Weiss also had a breakthrough- they met with Holbogarten and Mayor Horgon to find the gargoyle had changed a great deal, and no one knew how. He forgave Weiss's challenge, and his crimes, in the greater light of the party's accomplishments and service to the community! Somehow the heartless Gargoyle had come to find a new heart, and wisdom to weigh justice without vengeance or ruthlessness. But- Holbogarten wanted the party gone. The questionable execution of Deepfist, and all the pain and death that had surrounded the events made the party unwelcome in his sight.
The next morning, we headed out for Dreadful City along with Hemiola. We were distressed to be unable to find Michael and Sam, but sent them a message to hurry and join us at home in the City.
We didn't get far- somewhere near the crossroads where Deepfist first attacked us on our way to Newpost, unnatural purple lightning and flames lit up the sky over the city... the flashes and streaks came closer and closer... until a huge machine slammed down into the road right in front of us! And out of the wreckage appeared two Mindflayers, just like the Darkmaster, the one we met inside the world of Duke's mind!
Weiss wrangled the pack-horses and calmed their fears. Duke charged in while Ark, Gruffydd, and Hemiola prepared from a distance. One of the monsters clambered out of the wreckage, but the other one became stuck.
This gave Gruffydd an idea- he carefully aimed a Mud-ball spell near, but behind, the ship, blasting the trapped Mindflayer and stunning him, not to mention making it even harder to get out of the wrecked ship.
Duke dashed in to attack the one that was free, wounding it. Hemiola began to use Bard-music to inspire courage in everyone. Weiss shot the monster, too, and Ark blasted it with his recently more powerful Magic Missile spell, sending two blasts at once that killed it! Everyone cheered! But the other monster was still in the wreckage...
In stead of climbing out, it climbed back in... we waited for it to appear... but it did not...
Suddenly there was a flash and a ring of purple fire appeared, with two figures inside! Within we heard voices... one strange... the other familiar...
ALICE! The little kobold bardess from the beginning of our adventure so long ago! After a thousand years and not knowing what happened when she was captured by the doppelgangers, we heard her shouting to her comrade-another doppelganger!
Just then, Michael rode into the scene! Having received our distressing message about Dreadful City, he had ridden out after us and caught up while we were fighting! Not knowing what ws going on, Michael held out his sword and threatened Hemiola, the strange elf-orc who appeared to be skulking around behind our party making magical music. She cried out that she was an ally, but Michael was not convinced...
Then, Alice's friend the Doppelganger jumped out of the purple fire. Weiss originally joined us after Alice disappeared and did not ever know Alice or the Doppelganger Sibling Gelflek, our uneasy ally. The bear was confused and threatened by this sudden appearance, and dashed in to attack the shapeshifter. Gruffydd cried out for him to stop, and though not in time for him to actually stop, it did distract Weiss and he missed.
Before anything else could be done, we heard a beeping, clicking sound from within the spaceship... those of us who dealt with the awful robot-spiders long ago knew that sound- a self-destruct!
Immediately everyone was yelling and screaming to get away from the craft. Alice and her consort joined us in fleeing. Weiss cast a ranger spell to yell out to the horses and local wildlife to escape, flee! Ark used his Boots of Jumping to pull a pretty amazing move and flipped up into a tree to catch and rescue his Raven-familiar, tumbling down and shielding his pet from harm.
Though we ran as fast as we could, not everyone made it out in time! The explosion was huge- it burned Weiss and Duke, who had been closest and the last to flee, and peppered them with shrapnel! Duke twisted and dove to avoid some of the damage, but Weiss was unable to, and they both were hit hard.
As the party recovered and turned to run back to our fallen friends, Alice and her companion started to flicker and fade from existence- they shouted to the party, asking us what time period we had come to, but our attention was momentarily on helping our wounded friends, and in that instant, Alice and the Doppelganger vanished without a trace...
The game closed with the party divided into two small groups and helping our wounded comrades. How in the world had Alice appeared? What did she want from us? Would we ever see her again if she didn't even know what time period we were stuck in? Who would protect Newpost if Deepfist's 2nd-in-Command was still at large? What was happening in Dreadful City with time rifts opening again? Would we be thrust thousands of years into the past or future again, to have to start over again?! Or would it bring us closer to defeating the Time Beast and ending the struggle?
