Playoffs Week 1 - FAFF 2013
Wowza! The first week of playoffs is over – we are down from 14 to 8 teams remaining… and there were quite a number of upsets to be had this time around!

RESULTS:
PLAYOFFS WEEK 1: Week of April 5, 2014
(5)(9-7) Houston 27, (4)(10-6) Tucson 22
- As the Droughts had (more or less) limped into the playoffs, and the Texans made it in by the tip of their tongues, it was not too much of a surprise when the Texans took off and left the Droughts to dry up on their home field. How did they manage the win, despite 438 yards offense allowed? Don Stone (Zebra) – who ran a kickoff in, and kept the Texans’ hope for a potential cross-state showdown.
(7)(10-6) Indianapolis 17, (2)(12-4) Columbus 7
- Nate Nielsen and the rest of the Attackers struggled to put any points on the board, despite numerous opportunities, and this well-recorded cross-league rivalry fell in favor of the Stallions. Duane Waller ran for 151 yards and one touchdown, while an uncharacteristic Attackers rush offense only managed 52 yards. With an equally uninspiring effort through the effort, the Attackers were left without a clue, exiting the playoffs earlier than anyone had expected.
(6)(10-6) New York 24, (3)(10-6) Miami 21
- With Eric Andersen no longer at the helm for the Apples, nobody knew how newbie QB Andre Botkis would be able to handle the limelight, especially with an (almost) guarantee of all road games and having come off an injury last year that essentially sidelined the Apples from success. The Miami Heat, who are not used to the playoffs limelight just yet, struggled to burn the Apples to a crisp. RB Plato Madison (Dog – Carolina) got one on the ground and one through the air in this close contest.
(4)(10-6) Virginia Beach 29, (5)(10-6) Little Rock 24
- With the announcement that the Luaus (soon to be Lions) will also be changing their team colors after the season is over, one wonders how far QB Peter St. John and the last iteration of the Luaus can take their impressive team. They were disappointed last year in the second round – so let’s see if they can manage to make it further this time. RB Mohamed Hammas (Kite – Black) returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, tying a FAFF playoffs record, and guaranteed a win over the Miners – who generally had played better football for the majority of the game.
(7)(10-6) Cincinnati 24, (2)(11-5) St. Louis 10
- It’s been over a decade since both wild card teams made the second round of the playoffs, but if any team was going to make it, the Tulips were the most likely. The win over the Rangers marks the Tulips’ 9th-straight win. Failing to put on a show last year versus Atlanta, they made sure they were not to lose out immediately this playoff season. Thad Welch remained nearly-perfect, and the Rangers’ lack of big defensive plays lost them the game in this showing.
(3)(11-5) Omaha 38, (6)(10-6) Washington 21
- With Ron Cook emerging as an elite quarterback, the Raiders teased the Tigers into making vital mistakes that cooled down their roaring offense. Ben Polluck threw three interceptions and lost one fumble – making it hard to ever secure a good drive. Omaha’s Von Cahill caught two touchdowns, and sealed the deal with a final touchdown in the 4th quarter to beat the Tigers out of contention.

SCHEDULE:
So what does this mean for 2013? Well, none of the remaining teams in contention have been to a Pro-Team Bowl since 2009 (New York), so there will be a new rivalry established this year. In addition, at least one of the teams will get their first chance since the 1990s (CIN and CON) or their first chance EVER at a Pro-Team Bowl (VB and OMA)… which is pretty exciting! Here’s next week’s schedule:
Saturday, April 12th, 2014
(6) New York (11-6) @ (5) Houston (10-7)
Because of seeding, Houston achieves the rarity of a home game against the Apples, who have proven to be this season’s challenge. Remember – a potential division Pro-Team Bowl against the Yankees is always a possibility!
(7) Indianapolis (11-6) @ (1) Dallas (13-3)
The Stallions have their hands full as they attempt to take on the Dallas Knights – who, with rookie QB Leandro Nunez-Spencer – are definitely the most-improved team of the season, and are possibly a contending team for future years. Can the Stallions tap into the magic they had from the early 2000s and return to the spotlight with a huge upset? The Knights have won 12 straight games.
(7) Cincinnati (11-6) @ (1) Connecticut (12-4)
Cincinnati’s chances at a Pro-Team Bowl keep looking higher, but the Yankees have shut down high-profile teams like Dallas and Charlotte before. QB Geordan Abraham’s stellar season should not end here on their home turf.
(4) Virginia Beach (11-6) @ (3) Omaha (12-5)
The Luaus will keep the hope alive, as these two teams battle it out for their first Pro-Team Bowl appearance in history. Omaha’s chances have never been better, as they earn the 3rd-highest seeding of any remaining team after both St Louis and Columbus failed to win this week.

OTHER NEWS:
A NEW TEAM NAME… AND NEW TEAM COLORS TOO?!?
By now, it has been big news for months that Virginia Beach will rebrand themselves as the Lions in 2014. But it’s even bigger news now that the team is introducing new team colors – Golden brown and Yellow – that will replace the (outdated) Peach and royal blue that they have worn since their 1979 debut. Although Virginia Beach has been moderately successful under the name, and has outright won over the majority of Virginia’s fan base, the team felt it was time. “We were never under the impression that the Luaus were a plausible name for this franchise, and the fans tended to agree… [As] the Lions, we can establish a new beginning that will bring success to our team, and our first Pro-Team Bowl win,” said Head Coach Vincent Frankfurt during a pre-game press conference. Ironically, Virginia Beach’s win brings them a potential chance at the team’s first Pro-Team Bowl.
BUFFALOES CUT QB ANDY WRIGHT
After an uninspiring 5-11 season that placed the Buffaloes at the bottom of their division, the Buffaloes cut veteran QB Andy Wright (Lechwe) from their roster on Tuesday. Wright, who finished his 11th season and has had stints in Connecticut and Virginia, will have to fight hard for a roster spot on another team and prove that he still has what it takes.
ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER NEW COACH
Minneapolis has their fins full, as they fire their 4th head coach in 8 seasons. Fred Dahl, who was previously Defensive Coordinator for the Phoenix Storms, was fired from his position on Thursday after their 3-13 season ranked them dead-last in the standings for the majority of the season. A team member representative was not immediately available for comment.
TERRY HILLIARD SAYS GOODBYE
We all knew it was happening, but QB Terry Hilliard (Iguana) officially finished his contract and left the Wolves with a warm-felt goodbye this Monday. Even though Hilliard, who emerged in 1998 and had led the team since 2005, failed to win a Pro-Team bowl for the Wolves, the fans response to his presence had always been positive. Hilliard played in Detroit, Corpus Christi, Tucson and Chicago during his career. His post-retirement plans are to coach college football back home in Louisiana.
CHINCO IS AT IT AGAIN!
Fans are already well-aware of the exotic behavior that Chi Maio (Hyena – Brown) exhibits. Maio, who declared at the beginning of the season that he now officially goes by the name “Chinco,” has reportedly been trying to get traded out of Corpus Christi, using ‘generally unsavory’ tactics – creating several mini videos on FurTube that advertise his worth by flashing his Pro-Team Bowl ring, shaving his right arm, playing football underwater, and eating photographs of his rival opponents that included QB Kerry Galloway, Oliver O’Dell, and WR Freddie Cruz.
