Connecticut Yankees - A Pro-Team Bowl Preview
11 years ago
By Jason Coe (Ram)
Visiting the Yankees practice field in Hartford was nothing short of an experience on Tuesday evening, as the team was working to prepare for one of the biggest games of their lives. Expectations were high, but also were the moods and 'tudes.
"Just a bit nervous, that's all. There's a lot of pressure on us to win this game, but we remain focused and I work with each of the members of the offense each day to talk about our game plan," said lead quarterback Geordan Abraham (Llama) - who has performed under pressure all season to deliver 14 wins to his team this season and 3978 passing yards - more than any other quarterback in the league. WR Isaac McGill (Goldfinch - American) led the team with 1078 receiving yards.
Connecticut still maintains one of the largest fan bases in all of American football, but has struggled to keep that interest in the last few decades. Coach Graig Richter (Cattle) wants nothing more than to bring back that winning attitude to New England.
"It's important to the Yankees organization; it's important to each and every one of these men and women; it's very important to me."
Coach Richter made headline news in 2011 when his daughter, Bella, was tragically killed in a car accident after attending a Yankees home game. Richter was elected Head Coach in 2011, and had been quoted saying he wanted nothing more than "to win a championship for Bella."
Safety Clifton Maher (Hawk - Sharp-shinned) performed exceptionally in the playoff games, aggressively forcing two fumbles and recovering one. The Yankees outscored their opponents 40-19 in the playoff games.
He, like many of the other team members, couldn't hold their excitement despite the trainings and wishes of the coaches - but Maher knows when to turn it on and off.
"We're not ones to brag - but I can guarantee you that I'll want to rub it in the faces of my opponents if we win it. I'm excited - but I'm maintaining my composure like I should."
The Connecticut Yankees will face off against the Indianapolis Stallions in the 2013 Pro-Team Bowl tomorrow, Saturday, April 26th. The game will be held in Richmond, Virginia, at the Virginia Falcons home stadium.
