It can be, but be sure to get as much information on hand before making yourself available to commission work. Get to know artists here and on DA who take commissions. Despite their hectic schedules, you might be surprised what insights a few polite questions could provide you, especially if they do a journal or tumblr "ask me questions" thing. Try and grow an acquaintance with a few, to provide you with folks involved in making their skills commercially available to provide some degree of mentorship and advisement. Also, an inexpensive old copy of the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines can be insightful. Don't fuss over getting this years edition if you can't find one in a local library, or download it online. Any used one in good condition that's inexpensive printed within the last five years will be more than helpful enough.

My advice is to advertise any place you post your artwork. Widens your search pool. As for dA, groups help spread
your existence. Specifically the ones dedicated to commissions.

Again, more posts help. Multiple submissions over multiple days increases the chances of people running across your
artwork, liking it and coming to you for requests. Don't go all out though. They should be an accurate representation
of the skill you'll put into your commissions (i.e. their pics). It's also important to include an open commissions note
in the pictures you post so they see you're open.

Specific pictures like commission price sheets or simply 'commissions open' pics also do the trick. Something that that
says you're taking commissions right in the picture. Like your live stream pics; blunt and to the point. Though maybe
a bit more flashy. It needs to grab their interest first. Post these last so any of the new watchers you received
automatically and assuredly get the notice. These are also good because some people don't look at journals, but most
look at pics.

Don't take on more than you can handle. Have a good idea as to how many commissions you can handle at once and
don't be afraid to tun people away if you're full up. But, also keep them in mind for later; give them a call back once
you're free up to see if they're still interested.
