A couplethigns gaiz~ As the title states... I needs some help... and I will talk aobut
that below.. and below THAT is my regular type update! =3
<srs bsns>
I really need the opinions of some fellow artists. Especially commissioners on both sides. Artists doing commissions and patrons who buy them.
I hada problem yesterday with a long time friend and long term commission client. I'm not gonig to go into details becuase I'm notreally looknig for validation on this particular event.. but more so, how do I aproch this situatrion in the future. If I'm being too vague We can discussi t privately...
The problem comes down to this, the descriptions I recived were increadibly vague, so I took an opertunity to be experimental, with the client in mind while doing so... tryign somethign new thst I thoguth he would like baised on waht he had shown intrest in while conversing on msn... Well, I guessed wrong and he was unhappy withthe results and wants them redone. I will be doing thsi since it's no point in argueing withthis fellow... if Iwantmy payment I need to re-do it. His point of view, is that What I gave hism was not waht he asked for, and is not willig to pay for somethign he dowsn't want. I personally wish that he would pay me (even in fraction) for the time I spent on these unwanted commissions, but it will not go well to ask and I don't want a fight soI'm letting itgo and jsut fixing it for free.
My delema, is where doesthe responsibilty lie? not in this case specifically, but in general...
Is it the responsibility of the person asking for the commission to give clear description (including a list of important dos and don''ts?) There fore... if you are vague, and you recive somethgin you dom't like... either you deal with it, or pay forthe artist's time to fix it?
Or is it the responsibilty ofthe artist to keep a client happy? They are payign for a service so the obligation lies with the one doing the work. If it unclear, the artist should seek out ansers. If there is miscommunication (liek in my case) the artist must re-do the work and make it right with a paying customer.
I want to move forwardas an artist, I woul liek to seek otu more commissions outside of peoepl I know IRL.. and I woudl like to conduct buisness fairly... I don't want to get into a habbti that will end up shooting myslef in the foot. I have a great respect for anyone who wants my art wnough to payfor it, and my primary concern is makingthem happy, and having a smooth transaction. Atthe same time, I do not wantto sell myself short or run myself ragged.
I'd love ot hear everyon's opinions, (please also feel free to pass this allong to anyone you think has sage advice) you can comment here, or note me if you wantto have a private discussion... My msn can be found on my profile aswell so do not hesitate to converse withme aobut this.
thankyou all very vrey much for your time

well, in amore general sence.... how does one do inprogress of ascetch..? X___@
Thanks very much for your advice =3
I'll prolly need to figure out a mid point between scetches for better aproval process...
If someone sends me a vague description (i.e. I'm a red fox with a white tummy) they get an email back with, "OK, what's your eye color, hair style/color, height? any tattoos/scars/markings?" and so on.
Commissions are a business. Set up your guidelines and insist that your commissioners follow them.
If I am worried about how something is turning out, I will send them a small sketch of what I have so far.
In some cases, I ask for half the money before I start the drawing, and half when I send the in-progress sketch. It's harder to get 100% ripped off that way - if I never receive payment, I never start the sketch. If I never receive the second half of the payment, good for them, they got a small sketch for the money they spent.

thanks for taking time to give advice! XD use ful information is useful!!
Always ask for a down payment/kill fee up front. A kill fee is there to compensate you for your time should a commission be cnceled at any time. In my view, a down payment is necessary for me to start the project (I usually ask for at least 25% up front). One I begin the actual work, the doen payment becomes a kill fee and is non-refundable.
An artist is a skilled craftsman and technician in the same league as a plumber and a carpenter, and should be treated as such. Your friend DOES owe you some money for the time you put into artwork. It was partly his fault for not making clear what exactly what he wanted. if someone orders a "hamburger" and comlains when they get a Whopper instead of a Big Mac, he has to bear some responsibility.
But its also true you should have consulted with him about doing something experimental. Its best to keep big experimental stuff for your own stuff and keep to safe techniques for commissions. So I think the best thing really is to offer your friend the sketch at a reduced rate, and then go do the commission the way he wanted.
Plus I also vote for more titties and nudity (and other parts) XD Which should be no surprise to anyone. You have to go where your muse takes you, and there's certainly no shame in being an erotic or pin-up artist.
I love doing pin ups ;;o;; it's soooo fuuunnnn. I'm acually relaly really loving doing more erotic art too... I'm gonig to clear some of it up and post it here *_* I'm highly excited! =D
Especially point 4, based on experience.
If you only have a text description and not a reference picture, what the artist imagine (and draw) will not be the exact same image you had in your head.
If you try to correct that more than twice, both the artist and you will get frustrated because you will usually get further from what you imagined, not closer, and the artist get tired of redrawing things over and over.
That's why the WIP/sketch preview are so useful. Usually they catch things before you have to redraw more complicated things in color.
I also agree with Paul_Lucas about the 'kill fee' or 'artist work time fee'.
25-50% payment, non-refundable, before you start to draw is a good deal in my opinion.
I apreciate hearing both sides of things... I wanna make sure I do this right!!!
Communications is key. Make sure you're on the same page at all times.
Speaking of which, care to take a crack at a Tali pic?
